Om Gaṃ Gaṇapataye Namaḥ

In Mumbai, the spiritual heart of Ganeshotsav, Visarjan is a grand public devotion — from household idols to the great mandal processions that fill the city with “Ganpati Bappa Morya”.

Ganesh Chaturthi 2026 began on Monday, 14 September. The main and most auspicious Visarjan day is Anant Chaturdashi — Friday, 25 September 2026. Families may also perform the farewell after 1½, 3, 5 or 7 days according to their tradition.

The Spiritual Essence of Visarjan

When the clay form dissolves into water, it reminds us of the eternal truth of Sanatana Dharma: all forms are temporary, yet the Divine is everlasting. As we immerse the murti, we lovingly offer our ego, our worries and our difficulties along with it, praying with a full heart: “Ganpati Bappa Morya, Pudhchya Varshi Lavkar Ya!” — O Lord Ganesha, come again next year soon.

Where and How Visarjan Happens in Mumbai

Unlike most overseas locations, immersion in natural water is a living tradition in Mumbai. For Ganeshotsav 2026 the BMC has set up around 383 artificial immersion ponds across the wards — chiefly for household idols up to about six feet — alongside major natural sites such as Girgaon Chowpatty (Swarajyabhoomi), Dadar Chowpatty, Juhu Beach and Powai Lake. Rafts, lifeguards, drinking water and signage are arranged at the main points.

Devotees are encouraged to choose eco-friendly clay (shadu) idols, use the nearest artificial pond for smaller idols to protect the sea and lakes, and follow the traffic and safety advisories issued by the BMC and Mumbai Police, especially on Anant Chaturdashi (25 September 2026).

How to Perform Ganesh Nimarjanam in Mumbai

At a Natural Site or Artificial Pond

  • Perform the final Uttar Puja at home, offer flowers, durva, modaks and aarti before leaving for immersion.
  • Prefer the nearest BMC artificial pond for household idols — it is quicker, safer and protects the water bodies.
  • At Chowpatty and beach sites, follow the marked queues, the lifeguards and the raft arrangements; do not enter deep water.
  • Collect nirmalya (flowers, decorations) in the bins provided; do not throw non-biodegradable material into the water.

Eco-Friendly Home Visarjan

Families with small clay idols may also immerse at home in a bucket or tub and pour the water onto plants — a peaceful, pollution-free option that is fully valid.

Powerful Mantras to Chant During Visarjan

Chant these with deep feeling while performing the immersion:

1. Beeja Mantra (repeat 11, 21 or 108 times): ॐ गं गणपतये नमः — Om Gaṃ Gaṇapataye Namaḥ

2. Sankata Nashana Stotram:

3. Maha Ganapati Mantra:

4. Heartfelt Farewell Chant:

5. Ganesh Gayatri Mantra:

6. A simple prayer of surrender: “He Gajanana, He Vighnaharta — accept our humble worship. Take away all obstacles from our path. Bless our family with health, peace, wisdom and prosperity. Return to us again next year with greater grace.”

A Loving Message

Lord Ganesha does not measure the size of the idol or the grandeur of the procession — He looks only at the purity of the heart. Whether you immerse a small clay murti in a bucket at home or join a temple ceremony, the devotion remains the same. Involve your children: let them offer flowers and chant “Ganpati Bappa Morya” so the sacred samskara continues in the next generation.

O Lambodara, O Vakratunda — though we live far across the oceans, Your divine presence fills our homes. As we dissolve Your sacred form, dissolve our ego, our fears and our attachments. Remain forever in our hearts as the remover of all obstacles. Om Shri Ganeshaya Namah. Ganapati Bappa Morya! Pudhchya Varshi Lavkar Ya!

Note: temple timings, council permissions and municipal arrangements change every year. Always confirm current details with your local temple, organiser or municipal authority before the immersion day.
