What is Srivari Pushpa Yagam?

Pushpa Yagam literally means a sacrifice (yagam) of flowers (pushpa). It is one of the most beautiful festivals of the Tirumala year: instead of a fire offering, the Lord is worshipped with flowers in such quantity that the deities almost disappear beneath them. It is traditionally held in Karthika masam, linked to the Shravana nakshatra, the birth star of Lord Venkateswara, and comes after the Brahmotsavams that crown the festival year.

As traditionally explained, the Brahmotsavams involve so many rituals, processions and offerings that some small lapse by priests, staff or devotees is always possible. The Pushpa Yagam is offered as a loving atonement for any such lapse and as thanksgiving to Srinivasa. The festival has old roots in the temple's history, lapsed for a long period, and was later revived by TTD; today it is among the most watched utsavams of the year.

How the Pushpa Yagam is performed

TTD's 2025 programme, as reproduced by Hindupad, shows the usual order, which our Tirumala research file records:

  • Ankurarpanam (the evening before): the seed-sowing ritual that formally begins any major utsavam. In 2025 it was held from 8 to 9 pm on 29 October.
  • Snapana Tirumanjanam: on the festival day, the processional deities of Sri Malayappa Swamy, Sridevi and Bhudevi receive a holy bath with milk, curd, honey, turmeric and sandal paste at the Kalyana Mandapam in the Sampangi Prakaram.
  • The flower offering: in 2025 the Pushpa Yagam followed from 1 to 5 pm, with tonnes of flowers and leaves offered to the deities while priests chanted Vedic hymns and the Divya Prabandham.
  • Procession: afterwards, the Lord and His consorts are usually taken in procession along the Mada streets, giving darshan to devotees outside.

These timings are from 2025 and are given only as a pattern. TTD will announce the 2026 programme.

The flowers of the Pushpa Yagam

Devotees, TTD's gardens and donors from Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and beyond send flowers for the Pushpa Yagam. The offering traditionally includes many kinds of flowers and sacred leaves, among them chrysanthemums (chamanti), roses, jasmine, marigolds, lotuses, sampangi and kanakambaram, along with tulasi and fragrant leaves such as maruvam and davanam. Each is offered to the Lord in turn, and the colours and fragrance filling the mandapam are a sight devotees remember for years. TTD has not published the 2026 flower quantities, and we do not give figures here.

Flowers are also at the heart of daily worship at Tirumala, from the Thomala Seva, when the Lord is adorned with garlands, to the garland of Andal sent from Srivilliputtur for the Brahmotsavam Garuda Seva. The Pushpa Yagam gathers that devotion into a single day.
