Why Garuda Seva is the heart of the Brahmotsavam

Garuda, son of Vinata and the king of birds, is the Lord's vehicle and his most devoted servant. In Sri Vaishnava tradition he is honoured as Periya Tiruvadi, the great devotee at the Lord's feet, and as the Vedas in visible form, because the Vedas carry the Lord to the world just as Garuda carries him. As traditionally told, Garuda brought the sacred hill, Kridachala, down from Vaikuntha, and one of the seven hills of Tirumala is named Garudadri after him.

Of all the vahanams, Garuda is the one devotees wait for most. It is believed that seeing the Lord on Garuda removes fear and grants his protection, and many families make the journey to Tirumala for this one night alone. The procession is unhurried, with the deity carried slowly round the Mada streets to the sound of nadaswaram, Vedic chanting and bhajan groups.

Jewels and garlands traditionally adorned

On Garuda Seva night the Lord is decorated with some of his most precious ornaments. A news report on the September 2026 Garuda Seva (hindudayashankar.com, 19 September 2026) described the Makara Kanti and the Lakshmi Kasula Haram, a necklace of gold coins bearing the image of Lakshmi, among the adornments. As commonly described, the deity also wears the garland of Andal (Goda Devi), sent from her temple at Srivilliputtur, a link with the saint-poetess who longed to wed the Lord. Exact adornments are decided by the temple and can vary, so treat these as the traditional picture rather than a promise for 16 October.

What TTD arranged for the September Garuda Seva

TTD has not published crowd-management details for the 16 October Garuda Seva on its own. The arrangements reported for the Salakatla Brahmotsavam Garuda Seva on 19 September 2026 give a good idea of what to expect. The Hans India (20 September 2026) reported that:

  • the Garuda Seva began at 6:30 pm, and the four Mada street galleries were full by noon;
  • two-wheelers were barred from the ghat road from the morning, and four-wheelers were restricted from noon once parking was full;
  • TTD put giant LED screens at the outer ring road and holding points, and supplied food, water and buttermilk;
  • parents were advised to use ID bands and geo-tag children.

Expect the October crowds to be at least as large. The Hans India (6 October 2026) reported that officials at a TTD review projected about 20% higher turnout for the Navaratri Brahmotsavam than for the September festival, because it falls in the Dussehra holidays. Source: The Hans India

For the September festival TTD also cancelled several arjitha sevas and special darshans (TTD news, 4 August 2026). For the October festival TTD has announced the cancellation of VIP break and privileged darshans from 11 to 20 October (TTD news, 6 October 2026). Source: TTD News Source: TTD News

Practical tips for Garuda Seva night

  • Reach early: if you want a gallery place, plan to be on the hill well before noon, and be ready for long waits.
  • Vehicles: be prepared for ghat road restrictions like those in September. The APSRTC buses and walking routes are often easier than driving.
  • Children: use an ID band or a card with your phone number, as TTD advised in September, and agree a meeting point.
  • Elders: privileged darshans are suspended, so for elders, watching the procession on an LED screen at a holding point, or on SVBC at home, may be the kinder choice.
  • Carry essentials: water, any medicines, a light shawl for the night and some dry snacks. Leave valuables at home.
  • Bookings: use only TTD's official online booking portal or the official TTD app. Do not pay agents who promise Garuda Seva passes.
  • Follow official updates: TTD shares changes through its official website and channels, and has warned devotees several times against rumours on social media.

Watching from abroad on SVBC

For NRI devotees, SVBC (Sri Venkateswara Bhakti Channel) traditionally carries the Garuda Seva live, along with the other vahana sevas. Garuda Seva starts at 6:30 pm IST, which is morning in North America and afternoon in the UK and Europe, so convert the time to your own zone. Many families keep a lamp lit and chant the Govinda namas or Vishnu Sahasranama while the Lord passes on Garuda. Venkateswara temples abroad often hold their own Garuda Vahana Seva during this season, so check your local temple.
