The Story of Tulasi

Tulasi was Vrinda - a devoted wife of the asura Jalandhara. Her extreme devotion (pativrata dharma) made her husband invincible in battle. Devas approached Vishnu for help. Vishnu, in Jalandhara's form, approached Vrinda; when Vrinda realized the deception, she cursed Vishnu.

The Devas then killed Jalandhara. Vrinda, heartbroken, immolated herself. From her ashes grew the sacred Tulasi plant. Vishnu, moved by her devotion, promised that in Kartika month, He would marry Tulasi. Since then, every year on Prabodhini Ekadashi (Kartika Shukla Ekadashi), Tulasi Vivah is celebrated - the eternal marriage of Vishnu (Shaligrama) and Tulasi (the plant).
