What is Karwa Chauth?
Karwa Chauth is a one-day festival observed by Hindu married women (and increasingly by unmarried women in engaged relationships) for the long life, health, and well-being of their husbands. The name comes from Karwa (earthen pot used in the ritual) + Chauth (fourth day). It falls on the fourth day of Krishna Paksha in Kartik month.
The vrat is a nirjala (waterless) fast from sunrise to moonrise. Women wake before dawn, eat Sargi (pre-dawn meal from mother-in-law), then fast completely through the day. The evening involves elaborate puja and ends when the moon rises — the wife sees the moon through a sieve, then sees her husband's face through the same sieve, and he offers her the first sip of water to break the fast.
Karwa Chauth Legends
Queen Veervati's Story
The most famous Karwa Chauth katha. Veervati, the only sister among seven brothers, kept her first Karwa Chauth fast at her parents' home. Unable to bear seeing their beloved sister suffer, her brothers created a false moon by lighting a pyre behind a peepal tree. Veervati broke her fast believing she saw the real moon. Immediately she received news of her husband's death. Grief-stricken, she prayed to Devi with such devotion that Devi appeared and told her the truth — instructed her to observe Karwa Chauth again with full sincerity, and her husband would return. She did so, and her husband was restored.
Draupadi's Story
In another version, Draupadi observed Karwa Chauth for the Pandavas when Arjuna went to the Nilgiris for penance. Krishna advised her to observe the vrat for her husbands' safety and return. She did, and Arjuna's mission was successful.
Karwa's Story
Karwa, a devoted wife, was doing puja by the river when a crocodile grabbed her husband's foot. She invoked Yama with such devotion that Yama sent the crocodile to hell and blessed her husband with long life. From then, the earthen pot (karwa) she used has been central to this vrat.
Sargi - The Pre-Dawn Meal
Sargi is traditionally sent by the mother-in-law to her daughter-in-law before dawn. It's the last meal before the fast begins. Traditional Sargi thali includes:
- Fresh fruits (apple, banana, pomegranate)
- Dry fruits (almonds, cashews, walnuts, raisins)
