Ananda (आनन्दा, IAST: ānandā) is a Sanskrit-origin Hindu girl-name meaning “Bliss; the supreme joy of the realised”. Feminine of ānanda — the third of the three aspects of Brahman (sat-cit-ānanda).

Meaning, etymology & significance

Ananda (आनन्दा) is the feminine of the Sanskrit ānanda — bliss, the highest spiritual joy. In Vedanta ānanda is one of the three aspects of Brahman, alongside sat (being) and cit (consciousness). The famous formula sat-cit-ānanda summarises the entire Vedantic teaching: the absolute is being-consciousness-bliss.

In the Taittiriya Upanishad the great Bhṛgu Valli describes ānanda as the very form of Brahman: ānando brahmeti vyajānāt — "He realised that Brahman is bliss." To name a daughter Ananda is therefore to inscribe upon her name the loftiest aspect of the Vedantic realisation.

The name is unisex in some traditions (often used as Ananda for monks and saints; cf. the Buddha's disciple Ananda, Swami Vivekananda's order). In modern feminine naming Ananda is sometimes also spelled Anandi or Anandita for clearer gendering.

Pronunciation: aa-NAN-daa. Pair with classical surnames where the philosophical depth is welcome.

Astrology — nakshatra & rashi

By the standard Vedic correspondence between the first syllable of a name and the lunar mansion (nakshatra), Ananda aligns with the Krittika nakshatra, under the Mesha rashi (Moon sign).
