Jagrati (जाग्रती) and its more common variant Jagriti come from the Sanskrit verbal root jāgṛ — to be awake. In the Mandukya Upanishad jāgrat is the first of the four states of consciousness — the waking state, in which the soul experiences the gross outer world. The other three are svapna (dream), suṣupti (deep sleep) and turīya (the fourth, the witness of all three).
