Vishnu (Sreevallabha) temple · Thiruvalla, Pathanamthitta, Kerala, India
Sreevallabha Temple is an ancient Hindu temple to Vishnu, worshipped as Sreevallabha, at Thiruvalla in Pathanamthitta district, Kerala. According to the temple, the town's name comes from the presiding deity, and the shrine was glorified in the Tamil hymns of the Alvar saints Tirumangai Alvar and Nammalvar in the first millennium CE.
Faith & Tradition
The temple is regarded as one of the 108 Tirupatis (Divya Desams), The Hindu notes. The deity Vallabha is portrayed bearing a conch, a discus and a lotus, according to the temple.
During the annual Uthrasreebali festival, devotees worship five deities on a common platform (Ancheeswara-darshanom): the presiding deities of the three Bhagavathy temples of Karunattukavu, Padappad and Alamthuruthy, Lord Sreevallabha and Sudarshanamurthy. It is believed that the three goddesses come to the temple to accept the 'Vishukaineettom' offered by Vishnu, The Hindu reported.
Heritage
According to the temple, Thiruvalla is referred to in the 7th-century Sanskrit writings of Dandin, and the Tiruvalla copper plates carry inscriptions about the temple's administration in ancient times.
The temple's melshanti (chief priest) was once barred from entering the shrine after travelling overseas to attend a seminar in England, on the grounds that crossing the sea broke a ritual taboo, Outlook reported.
