Porutham Explained: The 10 Poruthams of South Indian Marriage Matching (Rajju, Vedhai and More)
South Indian families match horoscopes with ten poruthams rather than a score out of 36. Here is what Dinam, Ganam, Mahendram, Stree Deergham, Yoni, Rasi, Rasi Adhipathi, Vasya, Rajju and Vedhai each check, why Rajju and Vedhai carry special weight, a worked example and a side-by-side table with North Indian Ashtakoota.

Quick answer: In South India, horoscopes are matched with ten poruthams (porutham means "agreement" in Tamil): Dinam, Ganam, Mahendram, Stree Deergham, Yoni, Rasi, Rasi Adhipathi, Vasya, Rajju and Vedhai. Each compares the bride's and groom's Moon birth stars or Moon signs and is usually marked as agreed or not. Rajju and Vedhai are traditionally given the most weight. Lists and rules vary slightly between regions and astrologers.
What porutham is
Porutham, also called Thirumana Porutham or Jathaka Porutham and known in Telugu and Kannada families by similar names, is the South Indian way of comparing two horoscopes for marriage. Like North Indian Ashtakoota Guna Milan, it rests on the Moon: each person's birth star (one of the 27 nakshatras) and Moon sign (rasi), taken from the sidereal chart that most almanacs calculate with the Lahiri ayanamsa.
The difference is in how the result is read. Instead of adding points to reach a total out of 36, porutham looks at each factor separately and asks whether it agrees (uthamam, good), is moderate (madhyamam) or does not agree. Some factors, Rajju above all, are treated as close to essential, while others can be weaker without much concern. The list below is the one most commonly given; some astrologers use slightly different lists, add factors such as Nadi, or count twelve poruthams.
The 10 poruthams at a glance
| Porutham | What it compares | What it is traditionally said to indicate |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Dinam (Nakshatra) | Count from girl's star to boy's star | Health and day-to-day harmony |
| 2. Ganam | Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa temperament of the two stars | Temperament and mutual understanding |
| 3. Mahendram | Count from girl's star to boy's star | Prosperity, progeny and family growth |
| 4. Stree Deergham | Distance from girl's star to boy's star | Wellbeing and long prosperity of the wife and family |
| 5. Yoni | Animal symbol of each star | Physical and intimate compatibility |
| 6. Rasi | Distance between the two Moon signs | Family harmony and continuity |
| 7. Rasi Adhipathi | Friendship of the lords of the Moon signs | Mental compatibility and goodwill between families |
| 8. Vasya | Natural attraction between certain signs | Mutual attraction and affection |
| 9. Rajju | Body-part group of each star | Longevity and wellbeing of the couple |
| 10. Vedhai | Pairs of stars said to afflict each other | Freedom from obstacles and mutual affliction |
Each porutham explained
1. Dinam porutham
Count from the girl's star to the boy's star, counting the girl's star as 1, and divide by 9. As commonly reckoned, a remainder of 2, 4, 6, 8 or 0 (exactly divisible) is favourable. It is similar in idea to the Tara koota of North Indian matching.
2. Ganam porutham
Every star is Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa in temperament. The same gana is best; Deva with Manushya is acceptable; combinations involving Rakshasa are generally treated with caution, though astrologers apply this differently depending on whose star is Rakshasa.
3. Mahendram porutham
If the count from the girl's star to the boy's is 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22 or 25, Mahendram agrees. It is traditionally linked with children and the growth of the family.
4. Stree Deergham porutham
This checks that the boy's star is far enough ahead of the girl's. Most commonly, a count of more than 13 is called good; some astrologers accept more than 9 as moderate. Deergham means "long", and it is associated with lasting wellbeing for the bride.
5. Yoni porutham
Each star has an animal yoni, such as horse, elephant, serpent, cat, rat, cow, tiger or deer, and male or female gender. The same yoni or friendly yonis agree; traditionally hostile pairs, such as cat and rat, snake and mongoose, or cow and tiger, do not.
6. Rasi porutham
This counts from the girl's Moon sign to the boy's. A count beyond the 6th sign, or both in the same sign, is generally favourable, while the 6/8 relationship (shashtashtaka) is traditionally avoided, and many astrologers are also cautious about 2/12. Exact rules vary, and astrologers apply exceptions when the sign lords are the same or friendly.
7. Rasi Adhipathi porutham
This looks at the planets that rule the two Moon signs. If they are friends or the same planet, it agrees; neutral is moderate; mutual enemies do not agree. It corresponds to Graha Maitri in North Indian matching.
8. Vasya porutham
Classical tables list, for each Moon sign, one or two signs that are naturally drawn to it. If the boy's sign is vasya to the girl's, or the other way round, it agrees. It is read as mutual attraction and affection.
9. Rajju porutham
The 27 stars are grouped into five rajjus named after parts of the body. If both stars fall in the same rajju, Rajju porutham does not agree, and many families treat this as a reason not to proceed, unless an experienced astrologer finds mitigating factors. Different rajjus agree.
| Rajju | Nakshatras |
|---|---|
| Siro (head) | Mrigashira, Chitra, Dhanishta |
| Kantha (neck) | Rohini, Ardra, Hasta, Swati, Shravana, Shatabhisha |
| Nabhi or Udara (navel) | Krittika, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Purva Bhadrapada |
| Kati or Ooru (waist, thigh) | Bharani, Pushya, Purva Phalguni, Anuradha, Purva Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada |
| Pada (feet) | Ashwini, Ashlesha, Magha, Jyeshtha, Moola, Revati |
10. Vedhai porutham
Vedhai (vedha, "piercing") names pairs of stars that are said to afflict each other. If the bride's and groom's stars form one of these pairs, Vedhai does not agree, and like Rajju it is treated as serious. Otherwise it agrees.
| Vedhai pairs (stars that should not be paired) |
|---|
| Ashwini and Jyeshtha |
| Bharani and Anuradha |
| Krittika and Vishakha |
| Rohini and Swati |
| Ardra and Shravana |
| Punarvasu and Uttara Ashadha |
| Pushya and Purva Ashadha |
| Ashlesha and Moola |
| Magha and Revati |
| Purva Phalguni and Uttara Bhadrapada |
| Uttara Phalguni and Purva Bhadrapada |
| Hasta and Shatabhisha |
| Mrigashira, Chitra and Dhanishta (with each other) |
Worked example
An illustration with invented placements, not a real couple. The girl's star is Rohini (4th nakshatra, Vrishabha rasi) and the boy's star is Pushya (8th nakshatra, Karka rasi). Counting from Rohini to Pushya gives 5.
- Dinam: 5 divided by 9 leaves 5, not in the favourable list. Does not agree.
- Mahendram: 5 is not in 4, 7, 10 and so on. Does not agree.
- Stree Deergham: 5 is well below 13. Does not agree.
- Ganam: Rohini is Manushya and Pushya is Deva. Generally acceptable.
- Rasi: from Vrishabha to Karka is the 3rd sign; not a 6/8 or 2/12 pair. Commonly read as agreeable, though the exact verdict depends on the rule the astrologer follows.
- Rajju: Rohini is Kantha and Pushya is Kati. Different rajjus, so it agrees.
- Vedhai: Rohini's vedha partner is Swati, not Pushya. Agrees.
So this pair clears the two most important checks, Rajju and Vedhai, but fails three of the counting poruthams. A family astrologer would then look at Yoni, Rasi Adhipathi and Vasya, and at both full charts, before giving an opinion. This is typical: matches are rarely perfect, and the tradition is about weighing, not ticking every box.
Porutham vs Ashtakoota: side by side
| South Indian Porutham | North Indian Ashtakoota (Guna Milan) | |
|---|---|---|
| Where mainly used | Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana | North, West and Central India |
| Number of factors | 10 (some lists 12) | 8 |
| How results are expressed | Each factor agrees or not (sometimes good, moderate, poor) | Points, total out of 36 |
| Usual threshold | At least 5 or 6 agreeing, with Rajju essential (varies) | At least 18 of 36 (commonly cited) |
| Most weighted factors | Rajju and Vedhai | Nadi (8 points) and Bhakoot (7 points) |
| Shared ideas | Ganam, Yoni, Rasi, Rasi Adhipathi, Vasya, Dinam | Gana, Yoni, Bhakoot, Graha Maitri, Vashya, Tara |
| Unique to the system | Mahendram, Stree Deergham, Rajju, Vedhai | Varna, Nadi |
| Based on | Moon nakshatra and Moon rasi | Moon nakshatra and Moon rashi |
Many families today ask for both, especially in mixed North-South marriages. Both systems are usually supplemented by a check of Mangal dosha (Kuja dosha or Chevvai dosham), which is based on the whole chart rather than the Moon alone.
A balanced view
Porutham is a traditional tool, valued by many families for the way it slows the process down and brings elders and astrologers into the conversation. It is not a forecast of happiness, health or longevity, and no porutham result should be presented to a young couple as certain doom. Shared values, respect, communication and family support matter in every marriage and are not measured by any star chart.
If you follow Jyotisha, consult a qualified astrologer who explains which rules they are applying, and be cautious about anyone who uses a mismatch to sell costly rituals or gemstones. For a devotional practice before an alliance, many families pray at their family temple, recite the Navagraha Stotram, or give in charity.
Frequently asked questions
How many poruthams are needed for marriage?
There is no single rule. A commonly heard guideline is that at least five or six of the ten should agree, and that Rajju must agree, with many families also expecting Dinam, Ganam, Yoni and Rasi. Practices differ between Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Kerala traditions and between individual astrologers.
Why is Rajju porutham considered so important?
In the traditional view, Rajju relates to the longevity and wellbeing of the couple, especially the husband, so the same Rajju group is treated as a serious mismatch. Like all such rules it is a belief within Jyotisha, and astrologers also mention situations where its effect is said to be reduced.
Is porutham the same as kundli matching?
Both compare birth stars, but they are different systems. North Indian kundli matching (Ashtakoota) scores eight kootas out of 36 points. South Indian porutham checks ten factors and usually marks each as agreed or not agreed. Several factors, such as Gana, Yoni and the rashi relationship, appear in both.
Is porutham calculated from the girl's star or the boy's star?
Most poruthams count from the girl's birth star to the boy's birth star. Rajju and Vedhai compare the two stars directly, so the direction does not matter for them.
What if the poruthams do not match well?
Families who follow the tradition usually ask an experienced astrologer to look at the full horoscopes, including the dosha check and the planetary periods, before deciding. Devotional practices such as prayer at the family temple, the Navagraha Stotram or charity are commonly followed for peace of mind. No ritual guarantees an outcome, and nothing needs to be bought.
Do I need my exact birth time for porutham?
The poruthams use the Moon's nakshatra and rashi, which change roughly every day and every two and a half days, so the date of birth often gives the answer. But if the Moon changed nakshatra on the day of birth, the time decides which star applies, so an accurate birth time is always better.
Editor's note (9 October 2026)
This guide describes porutham as commonly practised in South Indian Jyotisha. The ten poruthams listed are the most common list; some astrologers use different names, add factors or count twelve. The Rajju groups and Vedhai pairs are the standard tables, while the counting rules for Dinam, Stree Deergham and Rasi vary between regional almanacs, and we have flagged where they do. The worked example uses invented stars. This is general information, not personal advice.
