Quick answer: Gita Jayanti 2026 UK date is Sunday 20 December 2026 in London, Leicester, Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds and Glasgow. It is Mokshada Ekadashi, it is the same day for Smarta and Vaishnava families, it matches India (Sun 20 Dec), and this year it is also Vaikuntha Ekadashi.

Gita Jayanti marks the day Lord Krishna taught the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra, as commonly told. Because it falls on a Sunday in 2026, British families have a rare chance to make a full day of it: a morning reading at home, a fast that is easy to keep without work getting in the way, and a visit to a mandir in the afternoon.

About these dates: the UK dates below are computed with HinduTone's sunrise-tithi calculator, which follows the Drik Panchang method and has been validated against Drik Panchang to within 1–2 minutes. Please confirm on Drik Panchang for your own city, and follow your mandir's calendar where it differs.

Gita Jayanti 2026 UK date: city-by-city table

Ekadashi is decided by the tithi at local sunrise. Britain's winter sunrise comes around 8 AM, several hours after India's, so we checked each city separately. Every city came out the same.

In plain terms: wherever you live in Great Britain, keep Gita Jayanti on Sunday 20 December. Families in Cardiff, Edinburgh, Belfast and smaller towns are on the same UK time and are very likely to match, but sunrise varies a little across the country, so please confirm on Drik Panchang. For Ireland, see our Vaikuntha Ekadashi 2026 guide for the UK and Ireland.

Smarta or Vaishnava: why there is no split in 2026

Ekadashi dates sometimes divide households. Smarta calendars usually take the day on which Ekadashi is present at sunrise. Vaishnava calendars are stricter: they avoid an Ekadashi that is touched by Dashami at dawn, and when an Ekadashi tithi starts after one sunrise and ends before the next, so that it touches no local sunrise at all, the two traditions can end up a day apart.

That does not happen this year. Our calculation gives Sunday 20 December for both the Smarta and the Vaishnava observance in all six cities, so ISKCON-following families, Sri Vaishnava families and Smarta households can all fast and read the Gita on the same Sunday.

If grandparents in India call to say Gita Jayanti is on Sunday, they are right for Britain too. Do not try to convert India's Ekadashi start and end times into UK time; the tithi is worked out afresh for local sunrise. The parana (fast-breaking) window is also local, so check Drik Panchang for your city on Monday 21 December morning.

Why Gita Jayanti is also Vaikuntha Ekadashi this year

Mokshada Ekadashi is the bright-fortnight Ekadashi of Margashirsha. Vaikuntha Ekadashi is the Shukla Ekadashi that falls within Dhanurmasam, the solar month when the Sun is in Dhanu. In 2026 the Sun enters Dhanu on Wed 16 Dec 2026, 4:41 AM UK time, four days before the Ekadashi, so both names belong to the same Sunday.

For South Indian families this is the day the northern gate of Vaishnava temples, the Vaikuntha Dwaram, is opened, as commonly told. The UK has many Hindu mandirs in Leicester, Wembley, Birmingham and elsewhere; check each mandir's own website for its plans, as we do not list temple programmes or timings. Our Vaikuntha Ekadashi 2026 guide for the UK and Ireland covers the Vaikuntha side of the day in detail.

How British families mark Gita Jayanti at home

  • Read or chant the Gita: Chapter 12 (Bhakti Yoga, 20 verses) is the most popular single chapter for the day. Chapter 15 (Purushottama Yoga, 20 verses) is another favourite. Devoted readers complete all 18 chapters between sunrise and sunset, often taking turns around the family.
  • A simple Gita path: place the Gita on a clean cloth beside a picture of Krishna and Arjuna, light a lamp, offer tulsi leaves if you have a plant indoors, and begin with a short prayer to Krishna and to your guru.
  • A kids' Gita quiz: on a Sunday with no school, ask children simple questions: Who drove Arjuna's chariot? How many chapters are there? What does dharma mean? Let older children memorise one verse, such as 2.47 on doing your duty without attachment to results.
  • Temple satsang: many UK mandirs and Gita study groups hold readings around this time. Check your local mandir's website or newsletter for what it is actually planning.
  • A simple fast: as Mokshada Ekadashi, the day is traditionally kept with a fast from grains and beans. A fruit, milk and nut fast is fully traditional. Anyone pregnant, elderly, diabetic or on medication should speak to their GP first.
  • Seva and giving: donating a copy of the Gita, or giving to a food bank in the run-up to Christmas, is a quiet way to honour the teaching of selfless action.

A 7-day Gita Saptaha reading plan ending Sunday 20 December

A Gita Saptaha (seven-day reading) lets busy households finish all 18 chapters by Gita Jayanti. Each evening session takes about 30 to 45 minutes reading aloud, less if you read silently.

DayDate (UK)ChaptersTheme
1Mon 14 Dec 20261–3Arjuna's despair, Sankhya Yoga, Karma Yoga
2Tue 15 Dec 20264–6Knowledge, renunciation, meditation
3Wed 16 Dec 20267–9Knowledge and realisation, the imperishable, the royal secret
4Thu 17 Dec 202610–11Divine glories and the universal form
5Fri 18 Dec 202612–13Devotion, the field and its knower
6Sat 19 Dec 202614–15The three gunas, the Supreme Person
7Sun 20 Dec 202616–18Divine and demonic natures, threefold faith, liberation

Day 1 coincides with Vivah Panchami (Mon 14 Dec) and Day 2 with Champa Shashti (Tue 15 Dec) in the UK, and Day 3 is the first dawn of Dhanurmasam. If you miss an evening, simply double up at the weekend; the aim is steady reading, not perfection.

Winter practicalities for Hindus in the UK

  • Dark, cold mornings: sunrise is around 8 AM in December, so an early reading before sunrise is quite achievable. Keep the heating on in the puja room and keep lamps on a metal plate away from curtains and smoke alarms.
  • Sunday advantage: Gita Jayanti falls on the last weekend before Christmas week. Expect busy roads and car parks near large mandirs; travel early and dress warmly if you need to queue outside.
  • School Christmas holidays: most schools break up in the second half of December, so children can take part in the Saptaha and the Sunday reading.
  • Christmas and Boxing Day: Christmas Day is Friday 25 December and Boxing Day Saturday 26 December. Datta Jayanti on Wednesday 23 December comes just before them.
  • Travel to India: if you fly to India for the holidays, the date does not change: Gita Jayanti is Sunday 20 December there too.

Frequently asked questions

When is Gita Jayanti 2026 in London?

Sunday 20 December 2026. Our sunrise-tithi calculator gives the same date for London, Leicester, Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds and Glasgow, and it is the same day as in India. Please confirm on Drik Panchang for your city.

Is Gita Jayanti the same day as Vaikuntha Ekadashi in 2026?

Yes. Gita Jayanti is celebrated on Mokshada Ekadashi, the Shukla Ekadashi of Margashirsha. In 2026 this Ekadashi falls inside Dhanurmasam, which began with Dhanu Sankranti on Wed 16 Dec 2026, 4:41 AM UK time, so the same Sunday is also Vaikuntha (Mukkoti) Ekadashi.

Do Smarta and Vaishnava families in the UK fast on different days?

Not this year. Sometimes the two traditions split when Ekadashi begins and ends between two sunrises without touching either. For 2026 our calculation gives Sunday 20 December for both Smarta and Vaishnava observance in every UK city in our table.

When is Gita Jayanti 2026 in Leicester and Birmingham?

Sunday 20 December 2026 in both cities, the same as London and the rest of Britain in our table. If your mandir publishes its own calendar, follow it.

Which chapter of the Gita should I read on Gita Jayanti?

Many families read Chapter 12 (Bhakti Yoga), which is short and devotional, or Chapter 15 (Purushottama Yoga), which many families chant regularly. If you have time, read all 18 chapters across the day, or spread them over the week with the Gita Saptaha plan in this guide.

When is the next Ekadashi after Gita Jayanti in the UK?

Saphala Ekadashi, on Sunday 3 January 2027 in all the UK cities we calculated, the same as in India.
