Quick answer: Vaikuntha Ekadashi 2026 Brazil date is Sunday 20 December 2026, and the same day is Gita Jayanti. It is the same in all nine Brazilian cities we calculated, from Porto Alegre to Manaus, and the same for Smarta and Vaishnava traditions, so ISKCON devotees, South Indian families and yoga students can all fast together. India also keeps Sunday 20 December. Break the fast (parana) on the morning of Monday 21 December; check Drik Panchang for your city's exact window.
This Ekadashi is Mokshada Ekadashi of the bright half of Margashirsha. Because it falls after the Sun has entered Dhanu (Sagittarius), within Dhanurmasam, it is also celebrated as Vaikuntha Ekadashi, or Mukkoti Ekadashi in Telugu and Tamil homes, the day on which, as commonly told, the gates of Vishnu's realm stand open.
How these dates were made: the Brazilian dates and Dhanu Sankranti times below are from HinduTone's calculator (Drik method; sunrise and sunset matched to Drik Panchang). They are calculated, so confirm on Drik Panchang for your city and follow your temple's calendar.

Saphala Ekadashi, the next one, is Sunday 3 January 2027 in eight of these cities and in India. In Manaus, the calculation gives Saturday 2 January for Smarta households and Sunday 3 January for Vaishnava traditions. Why Vaikuntha Ekadashi matters
Every Ekadashi is sacred to Vishnu, but this one is held to be the greatest of the year in South India. As commonly told, Vishnu opened the northern gate of Vaikuntha on this day, and whoever worships him with devotion is said to pass through it. That is why great Vishnu temples in India, such as Srirangam and Tirumala, open a special northern doorway, the Vaikuntha Dwaram, for darshan on this day. Our Vaikuntha Ekadashi 2026 India guide covers those traditions.
The name Mokshada means "giver of liberation". The Purana story, as commonly told, is of King Vaikhanasa, who dreamt that his late father was suffering. On a sage's advice he kept this Ekadashi and offered its merit to his father, who was released. The day is therefore also kept for the welfare of ancestors.
Gita Jayanti 2026 in Brazil: the day the Gita was taught
Tradition holds that on this Ekadashi, on the field of Kurukshetra, Krishna taught the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna. In Brazil, the Gita is read not only by Indian families but also by ISKCON devotees, Vedanta students and many yoga practitioners who know it as a core text of yoga philosophy. Gita Jayanti on a Sunday gives everyone a chance to read together.
A simple Gita reading plan for the day
- Short (20–30 minutes): Chapter 12, Bhakti Yoga, on the path of devotion; or Chapter 15, Purushottama Yoga, on the eternal tree of life and the Supreme Person.
- Medium (one hour): Chapter 2, which contains the teaching on the eternal self and the steady mind (sthita-prajna).
- Group reading: divide all 18 chapters among family members or friends, so that the whole Gita is read in one sitting.
- For children: read the story of Arjuna's doubt from Chapter 1 and talk about one verse, such as 2.47 on doing your duty without worrying about the result.
- Language: read in Sanskrit if you can, but a good Portuguese or English translation is entirely acceptable.
Our complete guide to the 18 chapters summarises each chapter, and Gita Jayanti 2026 explains the festival in more depth.
How to keep the Ekadashi fast in the Brazilian summer
Vaikuntha Ekadashi falls in early summer in Brazil, in the week before Christmas. Long, hot days change how you fast.
- Choose your level: a full fast, a fast with water only, or a phalahar fast with fruit, milk, nuts and yogurt are all traditional. In heat, the water-and-fruit fast is the sensible choice for most people.
- What to avoid: rice and other grains, beans and lentils are traditionally avoided on Ekadashi; ISKCON devotees follow this strictly. Many families also avoid onion and garlic.
- Good foods: Brazil's tropical fruit, such as mango, papaya, banana and coconut water, suits an Ekadashi fast very well. Sabudana, potato and nuts are common Indian choices.
- Night vigil: staying awake in kirtan, japa or Gita reading is an old Vaikuntha Ekadashi custom. Keep it gentle if you work on Monday.
- Health first: children, pregnant women, older people, and anyone with diabetes, heart conditions or on medication should take a light fast or speak to a doctor first.
Breaking the fast (parana) on Monday 21 December
The fast is broken the next morning, Monday 21 December, after sunrise and within the Dwadashi tithi. Vaishnava traditions also avoid breaking it during Hari Vasara, the first quarter of Dwadashi. Because the parana window depends on local sunrise and the tithi end time at your location, we do not give a single time: check Drik Panchang for your city, or follow your temple. Never use India's parana time in Brazil. Many begin with a little fruit, milk or tulasi water offered first to Vishnu.
For ISKCON devotees, yoga students and Indian families
Brazil's Hindu community is small and spread out, concentrated in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Brasília. For ISKCON devotees, Ekadashi is a regular discipline and Gita Jayanti a natural day for book reading and kirtan; for South Indian families, Vaikuntha Ekadashi is the high point of Dhanurmasam; for yoga students, Gita Jayanti is a chance to explore the text behind their practice.
At home, a simple Vishnu puja is enough: a lamp, tulasi leaves if you have a plant, flowers, fruit, and chanting of "Om Namo Narayanaya", the Vishnu Sahasranama or the Hare Krishna mahamantra. Dhanurmasam devotees can add the day's Tiruppavai pasuram at dawn; see Dhanurmasam 2026 dates and Tiruppavai schedule. If your local ISKCON centre or yoga school holds a programme, check its own channels; we do not list event times or venues. Frequently asked questions
When is Vaikuntha Ekadashi 2026 in Brazil?
Sunday 20 December 2026, in all nine cities we calculated (São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasília, Belo Horizonte, Curitiba, Porto Alegre, Salvador, Recife and Manaus), for both Smarta and Vaishnava traditions. India observes it on the same day.

Is Vaikuntha Ekadashi on a different date in São Paulo and Manaus?
No. Even though Manaus is one hour behind São Paulo, both cities keep Vaikuntha Ekadashi on Sunday 20 December 2026. The Manaus difference this season is for Saphala Ekadashi in January: Smarta Saturday 2 January and Vaishnava Sunday 3 January 2027.

What should I read on Gita Jayanti?
Any sincere reading is good. Popular choices are Chapter 12 (Bhakti Yoga), Chapter 15 (Purushottama Yoga) or Chapter 2, or a group reading of all 18 chapters shared among family or friends. Reading a translation in Portuguese or English is perfectly fine.
