Diwali 2026 in Brazil falls on Sunday 8 November in all nine cities we calculated, with Dhanteras on Friday 6 November. City-wise sunset, Pradosh Kaal and Lakshmi Puja muhurat for São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasília, Belo Horizonte, Curitiba, Porto Alegre, Salvador, Recife and Manaus, plus a simple home puja and safe-diya tips for a Brazilian summer evening.
Quick answer: Diwali 2026 Brazil date is Sunday 8 November 2026, the same day as India. In São Paulo the Lakshmi Puja muhurat is 6:56 PM – 8:34 PM, in Rio de Janeiro 6:41 PM – 8:20 PM and in Brasília 6:49 PM – 8:33 PM (local time). Dhanteras comes two days earlier, on Friday 6 November.
Amavasya (the new-moon tithi) prevails during the evening Pradosh Kaal on Sunday 8 November in all nine Brazilian cities we checked, and not on Saturday 7 November, so there is no split date this year. Falling on a Sunday, Diwali is easy to keep at home with family, friends from the yoga studio or the local ISKCON community.
How these times were made: the Brazilian dates and times below come from HinduTone's calculator (Drik method; sunrise and sunset matched to Drik Panchang; the Lakshmi Puja window is the overlap of Pradosh Kaal with the fixed sign Vrishabha). They are calculated, so confirm on Drik Panchang for your city and follow your temple's calendar. India dates marked Drik are from Drik Panchang.
Diwali 2026 Brazil: Lakshmi Puja time city-wise
All times are local clock time on Sunday 8 November 2026. São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasília, Belo Horizonte, Curitiba, Porto Alegre, Salvador and Recife share Brasília time; Manaus is one hour behind.
| City | Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) | Sunset | Pradosh Kaal | Lakshmi Puja muhurat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| São Paulo | Sun 8 Nov 2026 | 6:24 PM | 6:24 PM – 8:34 PM | 6:56 PM – 8:34 PM |
| Rio de Janeiro | Sun 8 Nov 2026 | 6:09 PM | 6:09 PM – 8:20 PM | 6:41 PM – 8:20 PM |
| Brasília | Sun 8 Nov 2026 | 6:18 PM | 6:18 PM – 8:33 PM | 6:49 PM – 8:33 PM |
| Belo Horizonte | Sun 8 Nov 2026 | 6:08 PM | 6:08 PM – 8:20 PM | 6:40 PM – 8:20 PM |
| Curitiba | Sun 8 Nov 2026 | 6:37 PM | 6:37 PM – 8:46 PM | 7:09 PM – 8:46 PM |
| Porto Alegre | Sun 8 Nov 2026 | 6:52 PM | 6:52 PM – 8:59 PM | 7:25 PM – 8:59 PM |
| Salvador | Sun 8 Nov 2026 | 5:37 PM | 5:37 PM – 7:53 PM | 6:07 PM – 7:53 PM |
| Recife | Sun 8 Nov 2026 | 5:16 PM | 5:16 PM – 7:35 PM | 5:46 PM – 7:35 PM |
| Manaus | Sun 8 Nov 2026 | 5:51 PM | 5:51 PM – 8:12 PM | 6:20 PM – 8:12 PM |
Notice how much the times move across the country. Recife's muhurat opens at 5:46 PM, while Porto Alegre's opens at 7:25 PM, because the north-east sees an earlier sunset on the same clock. If your city is not listed, do not copy the nearest one blindly; look it up on Drik Panchang.
Why Vrishabha? Vrishabha (Taurus) is a sthira, or fixed, rising sign, and tradition holds that worship done in a fixed lagna helps Lakshmi stay in the home. The muhurat is therefore the part of Pradosh Kaal when Vrishabha is rising at your location. That is why it starts about half an hour after sunset in every city above.

Dhanteras on Friday 6 November
Dhanteras honours Dhanvantari, the physician of the gods who, as commonly told, rose from the churning of the ocean holding the pot of amrit. It is also the traditional day to bring home something new in metal, often a small silver coin or a steel vessel, and to light a lamp for Yama at the doorway in the evening. In Brazil it is a working Friday, so most families keep it simply: a lamp after sunset, a short prayer to Dhanvantari and Lakshmi, and perhaps a new utensil for the puja.
A simple home Lakshmi Puja in Brazil
Many Indian families in Brazil live far from a temple, and many Brazilian practitioners will be doing their first Diwali puja. A short, sincere puja is enough. Our full Lakshmi Puja vidhi gives every step; this is the essential version.
- Before sunset: clean the home, especially the entrance and the puja corner. Draw a rangoli at the door with coloured powder, rice flour or flower petals.
- Set the altar: a clean cloth on a low table, a picture or murti of Lakshmi with Ganesha beside her, a kalash of water with mango or betel leaves (any clean green leaves will do), a lamp, incense, flowers, fruit and sweets.
- At the muhurat: start with Ganesha, then invite Lakshmi. Offer water, kumkum, rice, flowers, sweets and a lamp. Chant "Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah" 108 times or as many times as you can.
- Account books and work: many families place their ledger, laptop or business notebook before the goddess, a custom from Gujarat and Rajasthan known as Chopda Puja.
- Aarti and diyas: finish with the aarti, then light rows of diyas at the entrance, windows and balcony.
- Share sweets: ladoos, barfi or kheer, or local favourites. Brigadeiros on the puja plate are a happy Brazilian-Indian touch many families enjoy.
Diyas, heat and safety in a Brazilian summer evening
Diwali in Brazil falls in late spring, with long, warm evenings. In much of the centre and south-east the rainy season is under way, and Manaus and the north-east are hot and humid. A few practical points:
- Wind and fans: open windows and ceiling fans can push a flame onto curtains. Place diyas on a metal plate or tray, away from fabric, and switch off fans near the altar.
- Apartments: most city families live in apartment buildings. Check your building's rules before lighting lamps on balconies or in common areas, and never leave a flame unattended.
- Rain: if it rains, light the diyas indoors near a window and use LED lamps outside.
- Fireworks: many families now skip crackers. Pets, neighbours and dry vegetation are all good reasons to choose a cracker-free Diwali.
- Late light: in Porto Alegre and Curitiba it is still light at 7 PM. The diyas look best once the muhurat has begun and the sky has darkened.
Diwali for Brazilian yoga and ISKCON practitioners
Brazil's Hindu community is small but varied: Indian professionals and their families, devotees of ISKCON (the Hare Krishna movement), Vedanta students and a large community of yoga practitioners. For many Brazilians, Diwali is the first Hindu festival they celebrate at home.
For Vaishnava devotees, the festival season centres on Krishna as much as on Lakshmi. As commonly told, Diwali also marks Rama's return to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana, when the city lit lamps to welcome him. ISKCON communities usually give special importance to Govardhan Puja, remembering how Krishna lifted Govardhan Hill to shelter the people of Vraja. If you belong to an ISKCON centre or a yoga school, follow its own calendar; we do not list event times or venues.
If you are new to the festival, a simple practice is enough: light a lamp at sunset, offer a sweet and a flower, sit quietly and chant a mantra you already know, and share food with friends. Our guide to Hindu temples and spiritual centres in Brazil gives an overview of the main traditions.
Diwali in Brazil compared with India and the USA
Diwali is Sunday 8 November in India, the USA and Brazil this year. The times differ completely, because each muhurat depends on local sunset and the local rising sign. Compare with our Diwali 2026 USA Lakshmi Puja muhurat to see the same method applied to American cities. If you call family in India, remember that their puja will already be over by the time your Brazilian evening begins.
Share the Diwali 2026 blessing
Whether you light a single diya on a balcony in São Paulo or gather with friends in Rio, Diwali 2026 carries the same quiet promise across Brazil: the lamp we kindle outside is a reminder of the inner light that no darkness can overcome. As Maa Lakshmi's grace enters clean, welcoming homes, and light wins over darkness as commonly told, take a moment to bless the people you love. Share one of these blessings with family in Brazil and back home in India.
Deepa shloka: the lamp prayer
शुभं करोति कल्याणम् आरोग्यं धनसम्पदा। शत्रुबुद्धिविनाशाय दीपज्योतिर्नमोऽस्तु ते॥
Shubham karoti kalyanam arogyam dhana-sampada, shatru-buddhi-vinashaya deepa-jyotir namostu te.
Meaning: I bow to the light of the lamp, which brings what is auspicious and good, health and prosperity, and destroys ill-will. Many families recite it as they light the evening diya.
Lakshmi mantra for Diwali
ॐ श्रीं महालक्ष्म्यै नमः॥
Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah.
Meaning: Salutations to Mahalakshmi. Shreem is the seed syllable traditionally associated with Lakshmi.
