Quick answer: Dev Uthani Ekadashi 2026 Singapore date is Saturday 21 November 2026 and Tulsi Vivah is Sunday 22 November 2026 (Drik Panchang, Singapore). Our own calculation for Singapore gives Saturday 21 November for both Smarta and Vaishnava families. That is a day after India's Smarta date (Friday 20 November); in India, Tulasi Vivah is Saturday 21 November.

Dev Uthani Ekadashi, also called Devutthana, Prabodhini or Karthika Shukla Ekadashi, closes the four months of Chaturmas. As commonly told, Lord Vishnu wakes on this day from his yogic sleep on the serpent Shesha, and the next day families celebrate the marriage of Tulasi to Vishnu as Shaligram. In Singapore both days fall on a weekend in 2026, which makes a family puja at home easy to plan.

About these dates: Singapore's country dates are from Drik Panchang. Our Singapore calculation uses HinduTone's calculator with the Drik sunrise-tithi method. India dates are from Drik Panchang New Delhi. Please confirm on Drik Panchang and follow your temple.

Why Singapore is a day after India's Smarta date

An Ekadashi fast is fixed by the tithi that is present at local sunrise. According to Drik, in New Delhi the Dashami tithi is still running at sunrise on Friday 20 November (it ends at 07:15 AM IST), and by sunrise on Saturday 21 November the tithi has already moved on to Dwadashi. Because Ekadashi does not hold a sunrise on either day there, Indian calendars split: Smarta families fast on Friday and Vaishnava families on Saturday.

Singapore's sunrise comes at a different moment in the lunar cycle from India's. Our calculation for Singapore finds that the sunrise which falls in Ekadashi is Saturday's, for both Smarta and Vaishnava rules, and Drik Panchang's Singapore calendar agrees on Saturday 21 November. Tulsi Vivah, kept the day after, moves to Sunday 22 November.

In practice: if a parent in India fasts on Friday, you fast on Saturday in Singapore, and your Tulsi Vivah is on Sunday. If your temple announces a different day, follow your temple. Families from Malaysia will find the same dates on Drik's Malaysia calendar (Devutthana 21 November, Tulasi Vivah 22 November).

What Dev Uthani Ekadashi means

Chaturmas begins on Devshayani Ekadashi in Ashadha, when, as commonly told, Vishnu lies down in the ocean of milk. Through those four months many families avoid weddings, griha pravesham and other new beginnings. On Prabodhini Ekadashi the Lord is "woken" with conch, bells and singing, and the auspicious season reopens.

A widely recited waking verse begins "Uttishthottishtha Govinda tyaja nidram Jagatpate" — "Rise, O Govinda, Lord of the world, give up your sleep." Many families chant it at dawn before the deity, then continue with the Vishnu Sahasranamam.

Kaisika Ekadasi for Tamil families: Tamil Sri Vaishnavas know this Ekadashi as Kaisika Ekadasi. As commonly told, a devotee named Nampaduvan, on his way to sing to the Lord at Thirukkurungudi on this night, was stopped by a brahmarakshasa and promised to return to be eaten once he had sung; his truthfulness and devotion freed them both. The Kaisika Puranam is read in Perumal temples on this day, and singing to Perumal through the night is a special part of the observance.

Ksheerabdi Dwadashi for Telugu families: the next day, Karthika Shukla Dwadashi, is Ksheerabdi Dwadashi, when Vishnu and Lakshmi are worshipped with Tulasi and the amla (usiri) branch. For Singapore see Ksheerabdi Dwadashi and Tulasi Vivah 2026 in Singapore.

Keeping the Ekadashi fast in Singapore

  • Dashami (Fri 20 Nov): a light sattvic meal; many avoid grains in the evening.
  • Ekadashi (Sat 21 Nov): bath at dawn, lamp before Vishnu, the waking verse and Vishnu Sahasranamam. The fast avoids rice, grains and pulses; water, fruit and milk are traditional choices for most people.
  • Evening: bhajans or a visit to a Perumal or Krishna temple. On a Saturday this is easy to fit in; check the temple's website for its own programme.
  • Parana (Sun 22 Nov): break the fast after sunrise within the window on Drik Panchang for Singapore, then move on to the Tulsi Vivah preparations.

Health first: in Singapore's heat and humidity, a waterless fast can leave you dehydrated. Anyone pregnant, elderly, diabetic or on medication should ask a doctor first; a fruit-and-milk fast is fully traditional.

Tulsi Vivah at home in Singapore (Sun 22 Nov)

Tulsi Vivah celebrates the marriage of the holy basil, Tulasi Devi, to Lord Vishnu in his Shaligram form (or to Krishna). As commonly told, Tulasi was once Vrinda, the devoted wife of Jalandhara, and Vishnu promised to wed her in her next form as the tulasi plant. The vivah also marks the opening of the wedding season.

  1. Prepare the plant: clean the pot, place the tulasi on a small table or stool, and decorate it with a red cloth or chunri, bangles and flowers.
  2. Mandap: a canopy of sugarcane sticks is traditional. In a flat, four short sugarcane pieces, banana leaves, or simply a garland frame work well.
  3. The groom: place a Shaligram, a small Vishnu or Krishna idol, or a picture beside the tulasi.
  4. Puja: light a lamp, offer haldi-kumkum, flowers, fruits and a sweet, and chant a Vishnu or Tulasi mantra such as "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya".
  5. Kanyadaan and pheras: a family member takes the role of Tulasi's parent; tie the two with a sacred thread and walk around the plant seven times, or hold the Shaligram and circle it.
  6. Close: aarti, distribute prasad and share the meal with family and friends.

Tulasi in Singapore's climate: tulasi grows well in Singapore's warm weather, but too much monsoon rain can rot its roots. Keep the pot where it gets morning sun and drains well, and bring it under shelter during heavy downpours.
