Tulsi Vivah is one of the most beloved and emotionally powerful Hindu observances — the sacred marriage of Tulsi Maharani (the holy basil plant) with Lord Vishnu in his Shaligram form. In 2026, Tulsi Vivah falls on Tuesday, November 17 (Karthika Shukla Dwadashi).

This day also marks the official end of Chaturmas (the 4-month period when major Hindu weddings are paused) — making Tulsi Vivah the symbolic wedding-season opener. Every Hindu home with a Tulsi plant traditionally performs this sacred ceremony.

The Story of Tulsi Vivah — Vrinda and Jalandhara

Long ago, an asura (demon) named Jalandhara rose to immense power. His wife Vrinda was an extraordinarily devoted Vishnu bhakta. Her devotion was so pure that no enemy could harm Jalandhara as long as she remained chaste and prayed for him.

Jalandhara terrorized the devas. To stop him, Lord Vishnu took the form of Jalandhara himself and approached Vrinda. Believing him to be her husband, she lost her chastity inadvertently. The moment her power broke, Jalandhara was killed in battle.

When Vrinda discovered the truth, she cursed Vishnu: "You shall become a black stone (Shaligram), and only when I — in another form — am married to you, will your form be re-sanctified!"

Vrinda then immolated herself on her husband's pyre. A miraculous plant grew from her ashes — Tulsi. To honor her sacrifice and pure devotion, Lord Vishnu agreed: every year, Tulsi (Vrinda reborn) is sacredly married to Shaligram (the Vishnu form).

This eternal marriage symbolizes the perfect union of bhakti and divinity. It teaches devotion, sacrifice, forgiveness, and the sanctity of marriage.
