Quick answer: Dev Uthani Ekadashi 2026 Europe date is Friday 20 November 2026 in Frankfurt, Berlin, Paris, Amsterdam, Milan, Madrid, Dublin, Stockholm and every other city in our 18-city table. Smarta and Vaishnava families keep the same day. Tulsi Vivah follows on Saturday 21 November 2026 (Drik, Germany).

This is simpler than in India, where the Smarta date is Friday 20 November and the Vaishnava date (also Guruvayur Ekadashi) is Saturday 21 November. In Europe there is one date for everyone.

Where the dates come from: the European city dates are from HinduTone's calculator, using the Drik method. Drik Panchang's Germany calendar gives Devutthana Ekadashi on Friday 20 November and Tulasi Vivah on Saturday 21 November. India's dates are from Drik Panchang, New Delhi.

Why Vishnu "wakes" on this Ekadashi

Dev Uthani, Devutthana or Prabodhini Ekadashi is the Shukla Ekadashi of Kartika. As commonly told, Lord Vishnu goes into yoga nidra, cosmic sleep on the serpent Shesha, on Devshayani Ekadashi in Ashadha and wakes four months later on this day. Those four months are Chaturmas, a period of extra discipline when many families avoid weddings, griha pravesh and other new beginnings.

With Vishnu awake, the auspicious season returns. In India the wedding season traditionally reopens around this time, and in diaspora families too, Dev Uthani marks the point after which many feel comfortable fixing dates for ceremonies. Drik also marks Friday 20 November in India as the last day of Chaturmas and the start of Bhishma Panchak, the five days ending on Kartika Purnima (Tuesday 24 November).

In Maharashtra, Prabodhini Ekadashi is the day of the great Kartiki Ekadashi pilgrimage to Pandharpur, and in Kerala the Vaishnava day is celebrated as Guruvayur Ekadashi. For the Telugu and Kannada observance of the next day, see Ksheerabdi Dwadashi and Tulasi Vivah 2026 in Europe and Karthika Ekadashi 2026: Prabodhini.

Keeping the Ekadashi fast on a European Friday

  • The night before: eat a light, sattvic dinner on Thursday 19 November and avoid rice.
  • The fast: on Friday, families keep a full fast, a fruit-and-milk fast, or a single meal without grains, according to health and custom. Friday is a working day across Europe, so a phalahar fast (fruit, nuts, milk, sabudana, potatoes) is the practical choice for many.
  • Evening worship: with sunset before 5 PM in most of Europe in late November, the evening puja and Vishnu Sahasranama can be done soon after work, in a warm room with a lamp.
  • Waking the Lord: many North Indian families draw the Lord's footprints in rice flour or chalk, place sugarcane, seasonal fruit and sweet potatoes, and wake Vishnu by ringing a bell or striking a plate with the words "Utho Dev".
  • Parana: break the fast on Saturday 21 November within the parana window Drik Panchang gives for your city. We do not list parana times.
  • Health: if you are pregnant, diabetic, elderly or on medication, keep a gentle fast and talk to your doctor first.

Tulsi Vivah at home: simple steps

Tulsi Vivah is the ceremonial marriage of the Tulsi plant, revered as Vrinda or as a form of Lakshmi, with Vishnu in the form of the Shaligram stone or an image of Krishna. As commonly told, Vrinda's devotion was so great that Vishnu promised to marry her in her Tulsi form. Families who have no daughter often perform it as kanyadaan. Drik's Germany calendar gives Saturday 21 November, a weekend day, which makes a family ceremony easy.

  • Prepare the Tulsi: a European November is too cold for Tulsi outdoors in most places, so bring the pot inside to a bright windowsill well before the day. Clean the pot and decorate it with a small rangoli or kolam.
  • The mandap: make a small canopy with four stalks of sugarcane, or with sticks and a red cloth, over the Tulsi pot.
  • Dress the bride: drape a red chunri over the plant and offer bangles, sindoor, a bindi and small ornaments.
  • The groom: place the Shaligram or a Vishnu or Krishna image beside the Tulsi, bathe it, and offer yellow cloth, sandal paste and flowers.
  • The marriage: tie the two with a sacred thread, offer rice and flowers as blessings, and, in many families, carry the Shaligram around the Tulsi seven times for the pheras.
  • Aarti and prasad: sing the aarti, offer sugarcane, fruit, sweets and panchamrit, and share the prasad with friends and neighbours.

Keep the diya on a metal plate away from leaves and curtains. For mantras and a fuller vidhi, see Tulsi Vivah 2026: date, vidhi, mantras and significance.

Temples and community halls in Europe

Hindu temples and community halls in Germany, the Netherlands, France, Italy, Ireland and Scandinavia often mark Dev Uthani and Tulsi Vivah in some way, especially North Indian, ISKCON and Gujarati communities, but arrangements vary from year to year. Check your temple's own website or notices; we do not list events or timings. Late November evenings are cold and dark, so plan transport for elders and children.

For the rest of the season, see Karthika Masam 2026 in Europe, city by city and Karthika Pournami 2026 in Europe.
