Quick answer: The core mantras of Sravana Masam 2026 are Om Namah Shivaya and Mahamrityunjaya on Mondays, the Gauri mantra on Tuesdays, the Mahalakshmi beeja mantra and Sri Suktam on Fridays, and Om Namo Narayanaya through the month. Minimum daily practice: 108 repetitions of your ishta-devata mantra at sunrise.

Of the twelve months in the Hindu year, Sravana Masam is the one where japa is said to bear fruit fastest. The month takes its name from Sravana Nakshatra — sravana literally means listening — the birth star of Sri Maha Vishnu. A month named after the ear is a month meant for sound, which is exactly what a mantra is.

This guide gives the fifteen mantras most widely chanted across Telugu, Kannada, Marathi and North Indian households during Sravana — each with meaning, japa count and the day it belongs to.

How to chant Sravana Masam mantras correctly

  1. Bathe, wear clean clothes and face east or north-east at the puja shelf.
  2. Light the deepam with ghee or sesame oil and perform achamana.
  3. Take sankalpa — state your name, gotra and place, and vow the daily count for the whole month.
  4. Use a mala — rudraksha for Shiva, tulasi or kamalakshi for Lakshmi and Vishnu; never cross the meru bead.
  5. Chant at an even pace, audible to yourself but not the room (upamshu japa).
  6. Keep the count fixed for all thirty days — 27 daily beats 1008 once.
  7. Close with samarpana, offering the fruit of the japa, then sit in silence.

A note for NRI devotees: japa is strongest in Brahma Muhurta, the ninety-six minutes before your own local sunrise — chant at your local muhurta, not Indian clock time. Non-vegetarian food, onion, garlic and alcohol are traditionally given up for the full month.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which mantra is most powerful in Sravana Masam?

Om Namah Shivaya is the most widely chanted, as the month belongs primarily to Lord Shiva. For health and longevity the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is considered most potent, and for prosperity the Mahalakshmi beeja mantra on the five Sukravarams.

How many times should I chant a mantra?

One mala — 108 repetitions — daily is the standard householder practice. On Somavaram and Varalakshmi Vratam many do 1008. If time is short, 27 repetitions kept faithfully for all thirty days is considered more meritorious than an irregular larger count.

Can women chant Sravana Masam mantras?

Yes. All fifteen mantras are open to everyone; Mangala Gauri, Varalakshmi and Sri Suktam observances are led principally by women.

What is the best time to chant?

Brahma Muhurta — the ninety-six minutes before local sunrise — followed by the evening lamp hour. Mondays favour the pradosha period around sunset for Shiva mantras.

Can I chant if I live abroad and cannot fast?

Yes. Fasting is an aid, not a precondition. Keep a single satvik meal on Mondays and Fridays and hold to the japa count, chanting at your own local Brahma Muhurta.

What are the Sravana Masam 2026 dates?

13 August to 11 September 2026 in the Telugu/Amanta calendar. In North India, Purnimanta Sawan ran from 30 July to 28 August 2026.

Which mala should I use?

Rudraksha for Shiva mantras; tulasi or kamalakshi (lotus-seed) for Vishnu and Lakshmi mantras.

Do these mantras need initiation?

No. All fifteen listed are safe for householders without formal upadesha. Only a few Vedic recitations requiring upanayana are restricted.
