Quick answer
Vaikuntha Ekadashi 2026 in New Zealand: Sunday 20 December 2026. The fast is kept on Sunday across New Zealand, from Auckland to Christchurch. Parana (breaking the fast) is on Dwadashi morning, Monday 21 December; check the exact parana window for your city on Drik Panchang.
Vaikuntha Ekadashi, also called Mukkoti Ekadashi, is the day Vishnu devotees believe the gates of Vaikuntha open. It falls on Margashirsha Shukla Ekadashi, the same day as Mokshada Ekadashi and Gita Jayanti. For the full story and the Tirumala and Srirangam celebrations, read our main Vaikuntha Ekadashi 2026 guide.
This page is a practical guide for the Indian, Fijian Indian and Sri Lankan Hindu communities in New Zealand: where to go, what to expect and how to keep the day well if you cannot reach a temple. Falling on a Sunday in the early summer holidays, the 2026 observance is a good one for families to attend together.

New Zealand is on daylight saving time in December, so sunrise is early and the parana window is not the same as in India. Use your own city on Drik Panchang rather than an Indian calendar. For the earlier fast this month, see our Utpanna Ekadashi 2026 guide.
Why Vaikuntha Ekadashi is special
Vaikuntha Ekadashi falls in the solar month of Dhanurmasa (Margazhi). In South India it is the most important Ekadashi of the year. At Tirumala the Vaikunta Dwaram opens in the early hours of the day and stays open for ten days, and at Srirangam the Paramapada Vasal opens on Vaikuntha Ekadashi. Devotees who pass through these doors pray to reach Vaikuntha, the eternal abode of Lord Vishnu.
- The Padma Purana describes it as the Ekadashi that grants moksha.
- Traditionally, observing this one Ekadashi brings the merit of all the Ekadashis of the year.
- As Gita Jayanti, it is an ideal day to read or recite the Bhagavad Gita.
- Fasting, chanting and night vigil (jagaran) are the core of the observance.
The Ekadashi story itself comes from the Padma Purana: when the demon Mura attacked Lord Vishnu as He rested in a cave, a radiant goddess emerged from Him and destroyed the demon. Vishnu named her Ekadashi and promised that anyone who fasts on her day with devotion would be freed from sin. The story of King Ambarisha, protected by Vishnu's Sudarshana chakra when the sage Durvasa grew angry over his parana, is also often retold on this day.
Where to celebrate in Auckland
Auckland has New Zealand's largest Hindu population and the widest choice of temples.
Sri Venkateswara Temple, Auckland
Dedicated to Lord Venkateswara (Balaji), the Sri Venkateswara Temple is the natural focus for Telugu and Tamil devotees in Auckland on Vaikuntha Ekadashi, since the festival is most closely tied to Tirumala and Venkateswara worship. Expect special pujas and recitation of the Vishnu Sahasranama; whether a symbolic Vaikunta Dwaram is arranged, and at what time, is announced by the temple closer to the date. Check the temple's own website or social media in December for the 2026 schedule and any registration.
ISKCON Auckland
The Hare Krishna (ISKCON) community in Auckland observes every Ekadashi with kirtan, a Bhagavad Gita class and grain-free prasadam. Vaikuntha Ekadashi is also Gita Jayanti, which ISKCON celebrates enthusiastically, so expect Gita recitation and kirtan. As 20 December is a Sunday, the regular Sunday programme may take on an Ekadashi and Gita Jayanti theme.
BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, Auckland
BAPS has a mandir in Auckland that serves a large Gujarati community. The Swaminarayan tradition keeps Ekadashi fasts, but it does not follow the South Indian Vaikunta Dwaram custom, so do not expect a Paramapada Vasal ritual. It is a welcoming place for darshan and prayer on the day.
Wellington and other cities
Wellington has a smaller but active Hindu community, with temples and Hindu associations serving Gujarati, Punjabi, Fijian Indian and South Indian families. In Hamilton, Christchurch, Tauranga, Palmerston North and other centres, celebrations are usually organised by local Hindu associations, ISKCON devotee groups or South Indian cultural associations, often in a hall or a family home.
- Ask in your community WhatsApp or Facebook group in early December whether a Vishnu Sahasranama recitation or bhajan evening is planned.
- ISKCON devotee groups in many New Zealand cities hold Ekadashi kirtan even without a full temple.
- If nothing is planned nearby, a home puja (below) is a complete and traditional observance.
Temple programmes, timings and any registration requirements change every year and had not been announced when this page was updated. Always confirm directly with the temple before travelling.
Tips for visiting a temple on Vaikuntha Ekadashi
- Check the temple website or social media for the 2026 schedule in December.
- Arrive early - Sunday plus a major festival means larger crowds and limited parking.
- Wear modest traditional clothing; carry a shawl for evening programmes.
- Bring fruit, flowers or tulsi as an offering if the temple accepts them.
- Ask whether the temple serves Ekadashi (grain-free) prasadam if you are fasting.
- December is summer in New Zealand: drink water if you are on a partial fast.
Fasting rules
The vrat runs from sunrise on Ekadashi to the parana window on Dwadashi morning. Choose a level of fasting that suits your health.
- Avoid: rice, wheat and all grains, lentils, beans, onion and garlic.
- Allowed (commonly): fruit, milk, yogurt, paneer, nuts, potatoes, kumara (sweet potato), pumpkin, sabudana and buckwheat, cooked with rock salt.
- Nirjala: a fast without water, only for experienced devotees in good health. Children, the elderly, pregnant women and anyone on medication should keep a light fruit-and-milk fast.
For recipes that fit the fast, see our Ekadashi fasting recipes guide.
Keeping Vaikuntha Ekadashi at home
- On Dashami (Saturday 19 December), eat one light sattvic meal.
- On Sunday 20 December, wake early, bathe and wear clean clothes.
- Take a sankalpa to keep the fast for Lord Vishnu.
- Set up an image of Vishnu, Venkateswara or Krishna and decorate the altar.
- Offer tulsi (picked the day before), flowers, fruit, milk, incense and a ghee lamp.
- Chant Om Namo Narayanaya, the Vishnu Sahasranama or the Hare Krishna mahamantra.
- Read a chapter of the Bhagavad Gita for Gita Jayanti.
- Keep jagaran in the evening with bhajans such as Achyutam Keshavam and Govinda Bolo.
- On Monday 21 December, break the fast within the parana window and share prasad.
For Gita Jayanti offerings and tulsi sweets, see our Gita Jayanti 2026 guide.
Breaking the fast (parana)
Parana is done on Dwadashi morning, Monday 21 December 2026, after sunrise and before Dwadashi ends, avoiding Hari Vasara (the first quarter of Dwadashi). Look up the parana window for Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch or your own town on Drik Panchang. Break the fast with water or fruit first, then a light meal with rice or grains, offered to the Lord before eating.
Frequently asked questions
When is Vaikuntha Ekadashi 2026 in New Zealand?
Vaikuntha Ekadashi 2026 is observed in New Zealand on Sunday 20 December 2026, the same calendar day as in India. It is also Mokshada Ekadashi and Gita Jayanti.
New Zealand is ahead of India - does that change the date?
Not in 2026. Drik Panchang gives Sunday 20 December for New Zealand as well as India. Because New Zealand is on daylight saving time in December and many hours ahead of India, the parana window on Monday 21 December is very different from India, so check it for your city on Drik Panchang.
Do New Zealand temples open a Vaikunta Dwaram or Paramapada Vasal?
Some South Indian style temples arrange a symbolic Vaikunta Dwaram for devotees to pass through, but this varies from temple to temple and year to year. Check with the temple directly in early December.
Is there a Vaikuntha Ekadashi programme in Christchurch, Hamilton or smaller towns?
Hindu community groups and ISKCON devotees outside Auckland and Wellington often hold bhajans or a Vishnu Sahasranama recitation, but plans are announced locally. If nothing is arranged near you, a home puja is a complete observance.
When do I break the fast?
Parana is on Dwadashi morning, Monday 21 December 2026, within your city's parana window. We do not publish times; look them up on Drik Panchang or ask your temple.
Editor's note (5 October 2026)
This guide has been revised for 2026. The date (Sunday 20 December 2026 for New Zealand) follows Drik Panchang. We have removed earlier darshan timings, event descriptions and quotes that we could not verify, and we list only well-established temples. 2026 temple schedules had not been announced at the time of writing, so please confirm with your temple and check parana times for your city on Drik Panchang.
