Quick answer

Vaikuntha Ekadashi 2026 in Italy: Sunday 20 December 2026. The fast is kept on Sunday throughout Italy, from Milan to Palermo. Parana, breaking the fast, is on Dwadashi morning, Monday 21 December; check the exact parana window for your city on Drik Panchang.

Vaikuntha Ekadashi, also called Mukkoti Ekadashi or Swarga Vathil Ekadashi, is the most sacred of the 24 Ekadashis dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It falls on Margashirsha Shukla Ekadashi, the day also known as Mokshada Ekadashi, and coincides with Gita Jayanti. For the complete festival guide, including Tirumala and Srirangam, see our main Vaikuntha Ekadashi 2026 guide.

Italy's Hindu community is small and spread out, and there are very few traditional Hindu temples, so this guide focuses on what you can do at home, with honest notes on where to find community programmes.

Italy is on Central European Time in December, four and a half hours behind India. The fasting day is the same as in India; only the tithi times and parana window differ, so use your own city on Drik Panchang. See our Utpanna Ekadashi 2026 guide for the fast earlier in the month.

Significance of Vaikuntha Ekadashi

Vaikuntha Ekadashi falls in the solar month of Dhanurmasa (Margazhi). Devotees believe the gates of Vaikuntha, Lord Vishnu's abode, open on this day. In South India, temples open a special northern doorway: the Vaikunta Dwaram at Tirumala opens in the early hours of Vaikuntha Ekadashi and stays open for ten days, and Srirangam opens its Paramapada Vasal on the same day.

  • The Padma Purana and other scriptures praise it as the Ekadashi that leads to moksha.
  • Tradition holds that keeping this one fast brings the merit of all the year's Ekadashis.
  • It is believed to cleanse past sins and deepen devotion to Lord Vishnu.
  • As Gita Jayanti, it is a natural day to read or recite the Bhagavad Gita.

Vrat katha: the story of Ekadashi

The Padma Purana tells that the demon Mura tormented the devas. Lord Vishnu fought him and then rested in a cave. When Mura tried to attack the resting Lord, a radiant feminine power emerged from Vishnu and destroyed him. Vishnu named her Ekadashi and declared that whoever fasts on her day with devotion would be freed from sin and reach Vaikuntha.

Many families also tell the story of King Ambarisha, who kept Ekadashi faithfully. When the sage Durvasa grew angry over the timing of his parana and sent a demon against him, Vishnu's Sudarshana chakra protected the king. The story is a reminder that the fast is about humility and devotion, not hardship for its own sake.

Puja vidhi for devotees in Italy

  1. Dashami, Saturday 19 December: eat one light sattvic meal and avoid grains in the evening.
  2. Ekadashi, Sunday 20 December: rise before sunrise, bathe and wear clean clothes.
  3. Sankalpa: resolve to keep the Vaikuntha Ekadashi vrat for Lord Vishnu's pleasure.
  4. Set up the altar with an image of Vishnu, Krishna, Venkateswara or Rama.
  5. Offer tulsi leaves picked the day before (tulsi is not plucked on Ekadashi), flowers, fruit, incense and a ghee lamp.
  6. Chant Om Namo Narayanaya at least 108 times, the Vishnu Sahasranama or the Hare Krishna mahamantra.
  7. Read from the Bhagavad Gita, especially fitting on Gita Jayanti.
  8. Spend the day in japa, bhajans and quiet reflection; keep away from idle talk and entertainment.
  9. Keep jagaran in the evening with kirtan and stories of Vishnu, as health allows.
  10. Dwadashi, Monday 21 December: break the fast within your city's parana window and offer food or charity if you can.

Tulsi plants struggle outdoors in an Italian winter. If you keep one indoors, collect leaves the day before; if not, a sincere offering of flowers and fruit is fine. For Gita Jayanti offerings, see our Gita Jayanti 2026 guide.

Fasting rules

  • Avoid: rice, pasta, bread, all grains, lentils, beans, onion and garlic.
  • Commonly allowed: fruit, milk, yogurt, ricotta and paneer, nuts, potatoes, pumpkin (zucca), sweet potatoes and buckwheat (grano saraceno), with rock salt.
  • Levels: nirjala (no food or water) for experienced devotees in good health; phalahar (fruit and milk) for most people; a light fast for children, the elderly, pregnant women and anyone on medication.

Sabudana and other Indian fasting staples are available in Indian and Asian grocery shops in the larger cities. Our Ekadashi fasting recipes guide has dishes that work with these ingredients.

Celebrating Vaikuntha Ekadashi in Italy

Be realistic about local options. Italy's Hindu population is made up of Indian (including many Punjabi and Gujarati families), Sri Lankan Tamil, Bangladeshi and Mauritian communities, plus Italian devotees. It is concentrated in Lombardy, Lazio, Emilia-Romagna, Veneto and around Naples and Palermo. Traditional South Indian Vishnu temples are very few, so a Vaikunta Dwaram ceremony in the Tirumala style is unlikely.

  • ISKCON communities: ISKCON has centres and devotee communities in Italy, including around Rome, Milan and Florence. They observe every Ekadashi with kirtan and grain-free prasadam, and Gita Jayanti is an important day for them, so they are the most likely places to find a programme.
  • Hindu associations: Indian, Sri Lankan Tamil and Bangladeshi Hindu associations in the larger cities sometimes hold pujas or bhajans on major festivals. The Italian Hindu Union (Unione Induista Italiana) is the national body that represents Hindus in Italy.
  • Home and online: for most families the day is kept at home, often joined by an online Vishnu Sahasranama or a stream from an Indian temple.

No 2026 programmes had been announced when this page was updated. Ask in your community group or contact your nearest ISKCON centre in early December.

Parana: breaking the fast

Break the fast on Dwadashi morning, Monday 21 December 2026, after sunrise and within the parana window, avoiding Hari Vasara (the first quarter of Dwadashi). Look up the window for your city on Drik Panchang. Start with water or fruit, then eat a simple sattvic meal with rice or grains that you have offered to the Lord.

Health and spiritual benefits

A day without grains gives the digestion a rest and builds discipline and focus. Spiritually, the fast, chanting and night vigil turn the mind towards Vishnu and loosen attachment. Fast within your limits; devotion matters more than severity. If you want to see what else is coming up before December, our November 2026 festival calendar lists the dates.

Are there Vishnu temples in Italy for Vaikuntha Ekadashi?

Italy has very few traditional Hindu temples. Most devotees observe the day at home, with ISKCON communities, or with local Indian, Sri Lankan or Bangladeshi Hindu associations. A Vaikunta Dwaram ceremony like Tirumala's is unlikely, so a sincere home pooja is the usual way to keep the day.

When should I break the fast in Italy?

Parana is on Dwadashi morning, Monday 21 December 2026, within the parana window for your city. Check Rome, Milan or your own town on Drik Panchang; we do not publish times because they depend on local sunrise.

What can I eat on the fast with Italian groceries?

Avoid rice, pasta, bread and all grains, as well as lentils, beans, onion and garlic. Fruit, milk, yogurt, ricotta and other fresh cheeses, nuts, potatoes, pumpkin and buckwheat (grano saraceno) with rock salt are commonly allowed.

Can I join a programme online?

Yes. Many Indian temples and ISKCON centres stream Vaikuntha Ekadashi and Gita Jayanti programmes. Because Italy is four and a half hours behind India, a live morning stream from India falls in the very early hours of the morning in Italy, so recorded programmes may be more practical.

Editor's note (5 October 2026)

This guide has been updated for 2026. The date (Sunday 20 December 2026 for Italy) follows Drik Panchang, and we have removed the old date and tithi times. Italy has few Hindu temples, so we describe ISKCON communities and Hindu associations in general terms rather than listing specific events. Please check parana times for your city on Drik Panchang and confirm any programme locally.
