The story of the Ram Sita wedding

As commonly told, King Janaka of Mithila found the infant Sita in a furrow while ploughing a field for a sacrifice. He raised her as his own daughter. In his palace he kept the great bow of Shiva, which was so heavy that no king could even lift it. Janaka declared that only the man who could string this bow would marry Sita.

The sage Vishwamitra brought the young princes Rama and Lakshmana from Ayodhya to Mithila. In front of the assembled court, Rama lifted the bow with ease. When he drew the string, the bow broke with a sound like thunder. Janaka gave Sita's hand to Rama with joy.

King Dasharatha then came from Ayodhya with his family for the wedding. As commonly told, Rama's three brothers were married at the same time: Lakshmana to Urmila, Bharata to Mandavi, and Shatrughna to Shrutakirti. Tradition places this wedding on Margashirsha Shukla Panchami.

The story is told in the Bala Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana and, with much love and detail, in the Bal Kand of Tulsidas's Ramcharitmanas. Details differ between the two. For example, the Ramcharitmanas describes a swayamvara with many kings present, and a garden scene where Rama and Sita first see each other. Families follow the version they know.

Janakpur and Ayodhya celebrations

Janakpur in Nepal is honoured as the capital of King Janaka's Mithila and the home of Sita. Vivah Panchami is one of its biggest festivals. As commonly described, the city re-enacts the wedding with processions, the arrival of Rama's wedding party (baraat) from Ayodhya, and the wedding rites themselves at the Janaki Mandir. Pilgrims come from Nepal and India for the festival.

In Ayodhya, Rama temples hold wedding festivities, with decorated idols, bhajans and readings of the wedding story. Across Mithila in north Bihar and in many Rama temples in India, devotees sing traditional wedding songs and hold a symbolic Sita Rama kalyanam (wedding).

Why some families avoid weddings on this day

You might expect a divine wedding day to be the best day for a human wedding. But in some regions, especially in Mithila and parts of Nepal, some families avoid fixing their own daughters' weddings on Vivah Panchami. This is a custom, not a rule from scripture.

The reason commonly given is the suffering that followed Sita's marriage. She went into fourteen years of exile with Rama, was abducted by Ravana, and later lived apart from Rama. Parents do not wish such hardship for their daughters, so they choose another day.

Many other families do not follow this custom and see the day as auspicious. If you are planning a wedding, ask your family elders and your priest, who will consider the full muhurat for the couple.

How to do Vivah Panchami puja at home

Customs vary. A simple home puja:

  1. Bathe early and clean the puja space. Place a picture or idols of Sita and Rama together.
  2. Light a lamp and incense. Offer flowers, akshata (rice), tulsi leaves and water.
  3. Offer Sita a red cloth or chunri, kumkum and bangles, as for a bride. Offer Rama a yellow cloth or flowers.
  4. Offer a sweet such as kheer or laddoo, and fruit.
  5. Read the wedding chapter: the Bala Kanda of the Ramayana, or the Sita-Rama vivah section of the Ramcharitmanas Bal Kand.
  6. Chant 'Shri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram' or 'Sita Ram' and sing a Rama bhajan.
  7. End with aarti and share the prasad with family.

Some married couples pray together on this day for harmony in their home. Some unmarried people pray for a good life partner. Keep the prayer simple and sincere.
