Antaryamin (अन्तर्यामिन्, IAST: Antaryāmin) is an Sanskrit-origin Hindu boy-name meaning “The inner controller dwelling within all beings”. Combining antar (within, inside) and yāmin (controller, ruler, from the root yam — to govern), Antaryāmin is Viṣṇu as the unseen divine governor who steers every soul from within, yet remains ever beyond full comprehension.

Meaning, etymology & significance

The Antaryāmī-brāhmaṇa of the Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad (3.7) is one of the most celebrated passages in all Upaniṣadic literature, describing the being who dwells inside the earth yet the earth does not know, who dwells inside water, fire, space, and ultimately inside the self — controlling all. This inner controller is identified by Vaiṣṇava commentators, most notably Madhvācārya, with Viṣṇu Himself, the supreme personal God. The name thus carries the full weight of Upaniṣadic revelation.

Antaryāmī is deeply beloved in devotional communities, particularly among followers of Madhva and Rāmānuja; as a given name for a boy, it is often affectionately shortened to Antaryami or Yami in household use.
