Bhagavat (भगवत्, IAST: Bhagavat) is a Sanskrit-origin Hindu boy-name meaning “The Blessed One possessing all divine glories”. From bhaga (glory, fortune, auspiciousness, lordship, wisdom, renunciation) and the suffix -vat (possessing), Bhagavat is the supreme theological title in Vaiṣṇava tradition, designating the Lord who perfectly and eternally possesses all six divine excellences simultaneously.

Meaning, etymology & significance

Classical commentators, including Parāśara and Viṣṇu Purāṇa, define bhaga as comprising the six qualities: aiśvarya (sovereignty), dharma (righteousness), yaśas (fame), śrī (beauty/prosperity), jñāna (wisdom), and vairāgya (detachment). To possess all six absolutely and simultaneously is the definition of Bhagavān. This is thus not merely an honorific but a precise philosophical definition of the Absolute Supreme Reality in Vaiṣṇava darśana.

Bhagavat (or Bhagavān in the nominative vocative form) is arguably the most theologically rich title for Vishnu in the entire Sanskrit tradition, and the great scripture Śrīmad Bhāgavatam takes its very name from it. As a boy's name, Bhagavan is traditionally used with deep reverence, especially in Vaiṣṇava families.
