Brahmapitā (ब्रह्मपितृ, IAST: Brahmapitṛ) is a Sanskrit-origin Hindu boy-name meaning “Father of Brahma the creator”. Brahma refers to the creator deity, and pitṛ means father, making this epithet a direct declaration of Vishnu's role as the divine source from whom the Creator himself springs.

Meaning, etymology & significance

In the Puranic account, Vishnu reclines on the cosmic serpent Ādiśeṣa upon the primordial ocean, and from His navel a lotus arises bearing Brahma; this cosmogonic act is the precise referent of Brahmapitā. The name condenses an entire creation narrative into two syllables, honouring the intimacy of the father-son relationship even at the level of universal creation. A child named Brahmapitā carries the resonance of that primordial generative love.

This tender epithet of Vishnu appears in the Sahasranama to honour His role as the ultimate fountainhead of all creative power; note that the dative input brahmapitre takes the irregular pitṛ declension. Pronounce brah-ma-pi-tṛ with a retroflex ṛ vowel at the close.
