Daityaraja (दैत्यराज, IAST: Daityarāja) is a Sanskrit-origin Hindu boy-name meaning “King among the Daityas; lord of the titan race”. Composed of 'daitya' (the powerful titan sons of Diti) and 'rāja' (king, sovereign), this epithet, when applied to Vishnu, reflects his paradoxical sovereignty even over the cosmic forces of opposition — for he who rules the Daityas is lord of every power in existence.

Meaning, etymology & significance

The Daityas are the mighty descendants of the sage Kaśyapa and his wife Diti, renowned as the great adversaries of the gods across the Purāṇas. For Vishnu to be called their 'rāja' can be understood in two ways: either through the Vaishnava identification of Vishnu with Prahlāda (the greatest Daitya-devotee and their righteous king), or through the theological affirmation that Vishnu's sovereignty is so absolute it encompasses even those who oppose dharma.

In the Sahasranama context, this name may also echo Vishnu's manifestation as Vāmana, who as sovereign presence humbled Bali the Daitya king and reclaimed the three worlds. As a given name Daityarāja is unusual and somewhat complex in register.
