Dhenukarai (धेनुकाराय, IAST: Dhenukāri) is a Sanskrit-origin Hindu boy-name meaning “Destroyer of the donkey-demon Dhenuka”. From Dhenukā (the demon who took the form of an ass) and ari (enemy, destroyer), this name celebrates how the Lord's brother Balarāma, aided by Krishna, swung and slew the demon terrorising the Tālavana forest.

Meaning, etymology & significance

Dhenukā was an asura who assumed the shape of a powerful donkey and guarded the tāla-fruit forest, preventing cowherds from enjoying its bounty. Though primarily attributed to Balarāma's feat, Krishna's presence and participation mean both brothers share the glory, and Vishnu-Krishna receives this epithet as the ultimate source of that protective power. Ari conveys the sense of an implacable and victorious foe of all that harms the innocent.

This name appears in Vaishnava devotional literature commemorating the pastimes of Vraja. It is a valid devotional name for a boy, evoking courageous protection of community and nature. Pronounced dhen-u-kaa-ri.
