Jagannidhi (जगन्निधि, IAST: Jagannidhi) is a Sanskrit-origin Hindu boy-name meaning “The supreme treasure and repository of the universe”. Jagannidhi pairs 'jagat' with 'nidhi' (treasure, receptacle, from 'ni + dhā,' that which is placed within), declaring Vishnu to be the hidden treasury in which the entire cosmos is stored and from which it is revealed.

Meaning, etymology & significance

In classical Sanskrit, 'nidhi' refers to a buried treasure or a divine hoard — the nine nidhis of Kubera being the most famous instance. Applied to Vishnu, the compound elevates this to cosmic scale: the Lord is the inexhaustible storehouse of all that exists, all grace, all knowledge, and all life. Theologically, this reflects the Upaniṣadic teaching that all beings emerge from Brahman, exist within it, and dissolve back into it.

Jagannidhi is a meaningful and phonetically pleasing name for boys, used in Vaiṣṇava communities; it is pronounced 'ja-gan-NI-dhi' and shares its melodic quality with the more common 'Jagannātha.'
