Kalki (कल्कि, IAST: Kalki) is a Sanskrit-origin Hindu boy-name meaning “The destroyer of impurity; the white-horse avatāra”. Derived from kalka (filth, impurity) or understood as kalkin (bearer of the white horse), Kalki names the tenth and final avatāra of Viṣṇu who descends at the end of the Kali Yuga to annihilate adharma and usher in a new Satya Yuga.

Meaning, etymology & significance

The name resonates with the Sanskrit root kal (to count, to drive forward) and with kalka meaning the residue or dregs of an age corrupted by sin; Kalki thus embodies the divine cleansing force that burns away what has accumulated across the darkest of cosmic ages. Mounted on a blazing white steed and wielding a radiant sword, he is described in the Purāṇas as the warrior of cosmic renewal.

Kalki is honoured as both an avatāra name and, increasingly, a given name in Hindu families who wish to invoke the spirit of fearless renewal; it is pronounced kal-ki with equal weight on both syllables.
