Lavanantaka (लवणान्तक, IAST: lavaṇāntaka) is a Sanskrit-origin Hindu boy-name meaning “Destroyer of the demon Lavana”. From 'Lavaṇa' (the demon son of Madhu, a formidable asura) and 'antaka' (ender, destroyer, from anta + ka), this name honours Shatrughna as the hero who slew the demon Lavana and established the sacred city of Mathura in that very region.

Meaning, etymology & significance

The defeat of Lavaṇāsura by Shatrughna is narrated in the Uttara Kāṇḍa of Valmiki's Rāmāyaṇa. Lavaṇa, wielding a terrible trident gifted by Shiva, terrorised sages and beings of the three worlds; Shatrughna vanquished him in single combat and, upon that purified ground, founded the city of Mathura, which would later become the birthplace of Lord Krishna. 'Antaka' (the ender) carries the same resonance as Yama, the god of death — applied here to Shatrughna's absolute conquest of the demon.

Lavanantaka is an epithet of Shatrughna, the fourth son of Daśaratha; it is occasionally used as a devotional name for boys and is reasonably usable. Pronunciation: 'ṇ' is retroflex; the compound 'nt' is pronounced without a vowel between the two consonants.
