Mahamaya (महामाय, IAST: Mahāmāya) is a Sanskrit-origin Hindu boy-name meaning “He who wields the great cosmic illusion”. From mahā (great) and māyā (the creative power of illusion and cosmic appearance), Mahāmāya names Viṣṇu as the sovereign wielder of the supreme creative power by which the infinite appears as the finite universe.

Meaning, etymology & significance

Māyā in its deepest Vedāntic sense is not mere deception but the Lord's own śakti (power) through which the formless takes form and the one appears as many — an act of creative grace as much as concealment. Viṣṇu as Mahāmāya is the master of this vast cosmic theater, sustaining the world-play for the spiritual evolution of souls. The Devī Māhātmya also uses this epithet for the Goddess, showing how closely the concepts of Viṣṇu and Śakti are intertwined in this cosmic function.

Mahāmāya appears in the Viṣṇu Sahasranāma as an acknowledgment of Viṣṇu's role as the ultimate ground of cosmic appearance. As a given name it is more commonly associated with the Goddess in contemporary usage; for a boy it remains a rare but theologically meaningful choice, pronounced 'Ma-ha-MA-ya.'
