Niranjana (निरञ्जन, IAST: Nirañjana) is a Sanskrit-origin Hindu boy-name meaning “Unstained, pure, free from all coloring or taint”. Composed of 'nir' (without) and 'añjana' (collyrium, stain, taint), Niranjana names Vishnu as the pristine, untouched reality on whom no impurity of māyā or karma can leave any mark.

Meaning, etymology & significance

The word 'añjana' literally refers to the dark collyrium applied to the eyes, and by extension to any stain or coloring of the soul — the karmic and māyic impressions that cloud perception. As 'nirañjana,' Vishnu is declared entirely unstained by any such influence. The Upanishads use this very term to describe the self-luminous, pure Brahman.

Niranjana is one of the more widely recognized names from the Sahasranama and is beloved in both Vaishnava and Vedantic circles. Pronounced nee-RAN-jah-nah, it has a pleasing cadence and is sometimes given to boys in traditional Hindu families.
