Purusha (पुरुष, IAST: Puruṣa) is a Sanskrit-origin Hindu boy-name meaning “The cosmic Person, transcendent universal consciousness”. From pura (city, body) and the root uṣ (to dwell), Puruṣa is the eternal conscious being who dwells in the city of the body, and in His supreme aspect He is Viṣṇu pervading the entire cosmos.

Meaning, etymology & significance

The Puruṣasūkta of the Ṛgveda (10.90) celebrates the cosmic Puruṣa — a being of thousand heads and thousand feet — whose sacrifice gave birth to all of creation. Viṣṇu is identified as this very Puruṣa, the primordial Person who is simultaneously the sacrificer, the sacrifice, and the fruit of the sacrifice. In Sāṃkhya, Puruṣa is the pure witness-consciousness distinct from Prakṛti, but in Vaiṣṇava Vedānta He transcends even this distinction as the Uttama Puruṣa.

This name is among the most theologically rich in the entire Sahasranāma and is borne by Viṣṇu in countless scriptures; as a given name, Purusha or Purush remains in respectful, traditional use, with the retroflex ṣ pronounced distinctly from a dental s.
