Sankarshana (सङ्कर्षण, IAST: Saṅkarṣaṇa) is a Sanskrit-origin Hindu boy-name meaning “He who draws all things unto Himself”. From the root karṣ (to draw, to plough) with the prefix sam, Saṅkarṣaṇa names the divine power that attracts and gathers the entire cosmos back toward its source.

Meaning, etymology & significance

Saṅkarṣaṇa is one of the four vyūha (cosmic emanation) forms of Viṣṇu in the Pāñcarātra tradition, associated with the function of dissolution and the drawing back of creation. The name also carries an agricultural resonance — as the ploughshare turns soil, the Lord turns souls toward liberation. In the Purāṇas, Saṅkarṣaṇa is identified with Balarāma, the elder brother of Kṛṣṇa, who wields the plough as his weapon.

Saṅkarṣaṇa is an important name in both Vaiṣṇava theology and the Mahābhārata. Pronounced roughly 'San-kar-SHA-na,' it flows well as a given name and carries deep theological weight without being unwieldy.
