SaptadvIpavatIdAtr (सप्तद्वीपवतीदात्र, IAST: Saptadvīpavatīdātr) is a Sanskrit-origin Hindu boy-name meaning “Giver of the seven-continented earth”. Sapta (seven), dvīpa (island or continent), vatī (possessing, the whole earth conceived as seven landmasses), and dātr (giver) together describe the supreme act of renunciation by which Paraśurāma gifted the entire reclaimed earth to the sage Kaśyapa.

Meaning, etymology & significance

In ancient Indian cosmography the world is described as saptadvīpavatī—the earth endowed with seven great continents or island-continents (dvīpas). Having conquered adharmic rulers across this entire world, Paraśurāma did not retain even a cubit of land for himself but gave it all as dakṣiṇā to the ṛṣi Kaśyapa after completing the great Aśvamedha sacrifice. This act of total renunciation is seen as a hallmark of the avatāra's purity.

The epithet is attributed to Viṣṇu as Paraśurāma in devotional stotra literature, highlighting His transcendence over worldly attachment. As a personal name it is a long compound and works better in scholarly or religious contexts than as a daily given name.
