Sarva (सर्व, IAST: Sarva) is a Sanskrit-origin Hindu boy-name meaning “The All; totality itself, the entirety of existence”. Sarva means 'all,' 'whole,' or 'everything,' and in naming Vishnu Sarva the Sahasranama declares that He is not merely the master of all things but is Himself the totality of being.

Meaning, etymology & significance

Derived from the proto-Indo-European root meaning 'whole' (cognate with Latin salvus), sarva in Sanskrit encompasses every possible entity and quality without remainder. Applied to Vishnu, it is a name of breath-taking scope — He is the universe and its transcendence simultaneously, the container and the contained. Śaṃkarācārya's commentary on the Sahasranama explains this name as pointing to Vishnu's identity with the universal Self.

Sarva is also a well-known epithet of Śiva, making this name a point of beautiful convergence between Vaishnava and Śaiva traditions; as a given name it is terse and powerful, pronounced SAHR-vuh.
