Sarvatomukha (सर्वतोमुख, IAST: Sarvatomukha) is a Sanskrit-origin Hindu boy-name meaning “The one with faces turned in all directions”. From sarvatas (from all sides, in every direction) and mukha (face, mouth, front), this name evokes the cosmic form of Vishnu who simultaneously faces every quarter of the universe, impartially blessing and perceiving all beings at once.

Meaning, etymology & significance

The Purusha Sukta of the Rigveda already speaks of the cosmic Person as having a thousand heads and eyes in all directions, and Sarvatomukha is the concentrated expression of that imagery. It declares that Vishnu, unlike any finite being who can only face one direction at a time, is wholly present — his compassionate countenance is turned toward every soul simultaneously, so that no prayer uttered in any corner of the cosmos goes unmet. This omnidirectionality is also a symbol of the Lord's impartiality and universal grace.

The name Sarvatomukha is used in Vishnu stotra traditions and also appears in descriptions of temple icons in which the Lord's form radiates in all cardinal and intermediate directions. Pronounced sar-va-to-mu-kha, it is somewhat elaborate as a given name but carries an extraordinarily vivid spiritual image for a devotee.
