Shishu (शिशु, IAST: Śiśu) is a Sanskrit-origin Hindu boy-name meaning “The divine child; the innocent, tender one”. From the root śiṣ (to leave, to remain, hence what is newly born and tender), Śiśu as a name of Vishnu evokes the wonder of the Divine appearing in utterly vulnerable, innocent childhood form — most vividly in the infant Krishna.

Meaning, etymology & significance

The image of the Lord as a child is one of the most beloved in Hindu devotion: the baby Krishna lying on a banyan leaf at the cosmic dissolution, or the infant Vishnu being cradled by Yashoda. In this name, the infinite takes on finite tenderness, inviting the devotee into a relationship of nurturing and maternal love for the Divine.

Śiśu as a given name is rarely used in modern times but carries immense devotional warmth, evoking the vātsalya-bhāva (parental devotion) that is one of the nine modes of bhakti. Pronounced śi-śu, it is gentle and brief, well-suited as an affectionate name.
