Shreshtha (श्रेष्ठ, IAST: Śreṣṭha) is a Sanskrit-origin Hindu boy-name meaning “The most excellent, supreme among all”. Formed from the superlative of śrī (beauty, auspiciousness, excellence), Śreṣṭha is the Sanskrit word for 'best' or 'most excellent,' proclaiming Vishnu as the absolute summit of all qualities — beyond whom no higher excellence can be conceived.

Meaning, etymology & significance

Śreṣṭha, etymologically the superlative of praśasya (praiseworthy), shares its root with the divine name Śrī — the goddess of beauty and auspiciousness who is never separate from Vishnu. Calling the Lord Śreṣṭha is thus a declaration that He is the very apex of all that Śrī represents: beauty, prosperity, dharma, and grace. The Bhagavad Gītā echoes this in Kṛṣṇa's declaration 'mattaḥ parataraṃ nānyat' — 'there is nothing higher than Me.'

Śreṣṭha is used as both a divine epithet of Vishnu and as a surname and given name in many Hindu communities, particularly those with Vaishnava traditions. Pronounced shresh-tha, it is dignified, accessible, and widely recognized.
