Shrutisagara (श्रुतिसागर, IAST: Śrutisāgara) is a Sanskrit-origin Hindu boy-name meaning “Ocean of the Vedic scriptures”. From śruti (that which is heard; the revealed Vedic scriptures) and sāgara (ocean, boundless sea), this name celebrates Viṣṇu as the inexhaustible ocean from whom all Vedic revelation flows and in whom it rests.

Meaning, etymology & significance

Śruti, literally 'that which is heard,' is the highest category of sacred knowledge in Hinduism, comprising the four Vedas and their subsidiary texts, which were said to be directly heard by the ancient sages from the divine source. By naming Viṣṇu Śrutisāgara, the hymn declares that the entirety of that boundless corpus of revealed wisdom is but a drop drawn from His infinite being. The ocean image is beloved in Sanskrit devotional poetry for conveying depth that cannot be measured or exhausted.

This epithet appears in Vaiṣṇava stotra literature to honor Viṣṇu as the living source and substrate of all sacred revelation. Śrutisāgara is a beautiful and usable given name with a rich literary ring; it is pronounced shroo-ti-SĀ-ga-ra and may be affectionately shortened to Sāgara.
