Virabahu (वीरबाहु, IAST: Vīrabāhu) is a Sanskrit-origin Hindu boy-name meaning “The hero with mighty arms”. From vīra (hero, brave one) and bāhu (arm), Vīrabāhu exalts Viṣṇu as the heroic deity whose arms are the instruments of cosmic protection and the vanquishing of evil.

Meaning, etymology & significance

Vīra, from √vī (to be strong, to be brave), denotes a hero of the highest order, while bāhu refers to the arm as both a physical and symbolic seat of power and protection. In Vaiṣṇava iconography Viṣṇu's four arms each bear a sacred attribute — conch, discus, mace, and lotus — making His arms themselves symbols of His multifaceted divine authority. Vīrabāhu thus celebrates the Lord as the supreme champion whose arms uphold the three worlds.

Vīrabāhu has been borne by warriors, saints, and kings throughout Hindu history and is also an epithet of Subrahmaṇya (Skanda); it remains in active use as a given name for boys in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and among Vaiṣṇava communities. Pronounce: Vī-ra-bā-hu, with long ī and ā.
