Adrishya (अदृश्या, IAST: Adṛśyā) is an Sanskrit-origin Hindu girl-name meaning “She who is invisible, beyond ordinary sight”. The prefix a- negates dṛśya (that which is seen or visible), declaring that Lalitā transcends the reach of the physical eye and is perceptible only through the inner vision born of devotion and yogic practice.

Meaning, etymology & significance

In Vedāntic and Tantric thought, the highest reality is nirguṇa — without attributes perceptible to the senses — and adṛśyā affirms that Lalitā, in her ultimate nature, eludes all empirical perception. Yet the tradition also holds that she reveals herself to sincere devotees through grace, making the invisible lovingly accessible. This name thus carries a beautiful paradox: she cannot be seen, yet she is the very light by which all seeing occurs.

Adṛśyā appears as an epithet of Lalitā in this Sahasranāma, and it is also found in descriptions of Durgā and other supreme forms of the Goddess. As a given name, Adrishya is unusual but meaningful, with the simpler variant Drishya being the more widely used form.
