Brahma (ब्रह्म, IAST: Brahma) is a Sanskrit-origin Hindu girl-name meaning “The supreme, infinite, expansive absolute”. From the root bṛh (to expand, to grow great), Brahma denotes the boundless, self-existent absolute reality; as an epithet of Lalitā, it declares her identity with Brahman, the ultimate ground of all being.

Meaning, etymology & significance

The dative brahmaNe is unusual in this Sahasranāma, reflecting the neuter noun Brahman rather than the masculine Brahmā. It affirms that Lalitā is not merely a consort of Brahmā but is herself the impersonal Absolute—the pūrṇa, infinite awareness that the Upaniṣads designate as the substratum of all worlds. This is one of the most philosophically bold epithets in the entire text.

The identification of the Devī with Brahman is a cornerstone of Śākta Advaita, articulated most fully in the Devī Bhāgavata Purāṇa and the Soundaryalaharī. As a given name for a girl, 'Brahma' is unusual but deeply reverential; 'Brahmi' is a more common feminine adaptation. Pronounce it BRAH-mah.
