Jagariṇi (जागरिणी, IAST: Jāgariṇī) is a Sanskrit-origin Hindu girl-name meaning “She who is ever wakeful, the eternally alert one”. Derived from the Sanskrit root jāgṛ (to be awake, to watch), this name honours Lalitā as the cosmic consciousness that never sleeps or lapses into inattention.

Meaning, etymology & significance

The root jāgṛ gives us jāgara (wakefulness) and its feminine derivative jāgariṇī, she who embodies the waking state and ceaseless vigilance. In Vedāntic cosmology the waking state (jāgrat) is the first of the four states of consciousness, and the Goddess in this aspect presides over wakeful awareness in all beings. Her perpetual alertness is the very light by which the world is perceived and sustained.

As Jāgariṇī, Lalitā is the guardian whose eyes never close, protecting devotees through every moment of conscious life. The name is pronounced jaa-ga-ri-NEE, with the long initial vowel clearly sounded.
