Kalakanthi (कालकण्ठी, IAST: Kālākaṇṭhī) is a Sanskrit-origin Hindu girl-name meaning “She whose throat is dark and beautiful like Shiva's”. From 'kāla' (dark, black; also time) and 'kaṇṭha' (throat) with the feminine suffix '-ī', Kālākaṇṭhī evokes the Goddess who bears a darkened throat — a quality she shares with or transcends in relation to Śiva Nīlakaṇṭha.

Meaning, etymology & significance

Śiva bears the epithet 'Nīlakaṇṭha' (blue-throated) because he held the poison Halāhala in his throat to protect the cosmos. Lalitā as Kālākaṇṭhī is understood in the Śākta tradition as the Power that enabled this act — she whose throat is dark with the absorbed poison of existence, or who is the consort so intimately united with Śiva that she shares his most iconic mark. Some commentators interpret 'kāla' here in its temporal sense, understanding Lalitā as the one who holds Time itself in her throat.

This is an epithet of Lalitā in the Lalitā Sahasranāma, affirming her non-dual identity with Śiva. Pronounced 'Kaa-la-kan-thee', the name is used occasionally in devotional naming traditions, especially in Śaiva-Śākta families.
