Mahamantra (महामन्त्रा, IAST: Mahāmantrā) is a Sanskrit-origin Hindu girl-name meaning “She who embodies the supreme sacred mantra”. From mahā (great) and mantra (sacred sound formula), Lalitā herself is the living embodiment of the highest mantra — the Pañcadaśī or Ṣoḍaśī — which liberates all who recite it.

Meaning, etymology & significance

The word mantra is understood as mananāt trāyate, meaning 'that which protects through contemplation,' pointing to the liberating power of sacred sound. As Mahāmantrā, Lalitā transcends being merely invoked by mantra; she is herself the mantra — the primal vibration from which all sacred syllables arise. The Śrīvidyā tradition especially reveres her as the supreme mantra in human form.

Devotees of the Śrīvidyā sampradāya use this name to acknowledge the unity of the Goddess and her bīja. Pronounced mah-haa-mun-traa, with the long ā vowels carefully sustained.
