Nādarūpā (नादरूपा, IAST: Nādarūpā) is a Sanskrit-origin Hindu girl-name meaning “She whose very form is sacred sound”. From nāda (primordial sound, the vibratory resonance underlying all creation) and rūpā (she whose form is), this name reveals Lalitā as the embodiment of the cosmic sound-principle from which all existence vibrates into being.

Meaning, etymology & significance

In Indian philosophy and tantra, nāda refers to the primordial undifferentiated sound-vibration that precedes all speech, music, and manifestation—it is the subtle substratum of the universe. Rūpā means 'having the form of' or 'whose nature is.' As Nādarūpā, Lalitā is identified with nādabrahman, the supreme reality experienced as sound, linking her to the sacred syllable Oṃ and to the entire tradition of mantra-vidyā.

This epithet is found in Śākta stotras and the Lalitā Sahasranāma and is also associated with Sarasvatī in her capacity as mistress of music and sacred sound; Nādarūpā is occasionally used as a poetic girl's name by devotional families. The long ā in nāda and the long ā in rūpā both carry equal weight in pronunciation.
