Built from nis (without) and āśraya (support, refuge, foundation), this name paradoxically reveals that Lalitā — who is the supreme refuge of all beings — herself rests on nothing other than her own sovereign existence.

Āśraya means a prop, a shelter, or a foundation upon which something depends; nirāśrayā therefore signifies that which needs no external support to exist. This is the ultimate statement of divine self-sufficiency: while all of creation rests in Lalitā as in a great cosmic womb, she herself is supported by nothing beyond her own infinite being.
