Nirepa (निर्लेपा, IAST: Nirlepā) is a Sanskrit-origin Hindu girl-name meaning “She who is untouched; free from all attachment or smearing”. From nir (free from) and lepa (smearing, coating, attachment), Nirlepā describes Lalitha as the pure consciousness that, though pervading all of creation, remains forever uncontaminated by it.

Meaning, etymology & significance

Lepa in Sanskrit refers to a plaster, coating, or smear — and metaphysically to the stain of karma, desire, or attachment that coats ordinary consciousness. Nir removes this entirely, revealing a state of pristine, unattached awareness. As Nirlepā, Lalitha is the supreme witness-consciousness (sākṣī) who pervades all yet is touched by nothing — the lotus that blooms upon the waters without being wetted.

This contemplative epithet of Lalitha is closely associated with the Advaitic understanding of the goddess as pure, unconditioned awareness. Pronounced nir-le-pā, it is an elegant, meaningful name for devotional use.
