Parakasha (परकाशा, IAST: Parākāśā) is a Sanskrit-origin Hindu girl-name meaning “She who is the supreme, transcendent luminous space”. Parā means supreme or beyond, and ākāśa means luminous ether or pure space; together they name the Goddess as the transcendent, self-luminous expanse that holds all creation within itself.

Meaning, etymology & significance

Ākāśa in Indian cosmology is the subtlest of the five elements, the medium of sound and space; prefixed with parā it rises above the physical to denote the infinite, self-shining consciousness that is Her very nature. This name echoes the Tantric understanding of cidākāśa, the sky of pure awareness. Lalitā as Parākāśā is the unlimited, brilliant void in which all worlds arise and dissolve.

The epithet resonates with the Kashmiri Śaiva concept of prakāśa-vimarśa, the light and its self-awareness; it is pronounced pa-RAA-kaa-shaa, with the second syllable long.
