Purvaja (पूर्वजा, IAST: Pūrvajā) is a Sanskrit-origin Hindu girl-name meaning “She who is born first; the primordial one”. From pūrva (first, prior, ancient) and jā (born), this name proclaims Lalitā as the primordial power who precedes and gives rise to all of existence.

Meaning, etymology & significance

Pūrva carries the weight of anteriority — that which came before all else — while the suffix jā is derived from the root jan, to be born or to originate. Together they describe the Goddess as the first-born of all beings, or more precisely, as the primordial cause that precedes all manifestation. In Śākta philosophy, the Divine Mother is the original Śakti from whom even Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Śiva draw their powers.

Pūrvajā is an epithet of Lalitā pointing to Her transcendence of time, and it works gracefully as a given name. Pronounced POOR-va-jaa; the long ū gives it a resonant opening sound.
