Aksharabhyasam (Vidyarambham) — the Hindu rite that initiates a child into learning: significance, muhurtam (Vijayadashami), step-by-step vidhi, the Saraswati shloka and how NRIs perform it.
Aksharabhyasam (also called Vidyarambham, "the beginning of learning") is the samskara that initiates a child into the world of letters and knowledge. Under the blessings of Goddess Saraswati and Lord Ganesha, the child writes their first letters — a tender, joyful start to a lifetime of learning.
Significance
Knowledge is revered in Sanatana Dharma as a divine gift. In this rite the child, guided by an elder’s hand, writes a sacred syllable (often "Om" or "Sri") in a tray of rice, and sometimes traces letters on the tongue with honey/gold — invoking sweetness and wisdom in learning.
When Is It Performed?
- Commonly between ages 2–5, on an auspicious day.
- Vijayadashami (Dussehra) and Vasant Panchami (Saraswati’s day) are especially favoured.
- Choose a shubha muhurtam via a panchang or your purohit, adjusting for your time zone.
Items (Samagri)
- A tray of rice for writing the first letters
- Images/idols of Goddess Saraswati and Lord Ganesha
- A lamp, turmeric, kumkum, flowers; a slate/book and pen
- Fruits, sweets and prasadam
Step-by-Step Vidhi
- Clean the space; light a lamp and invoke Lord Ganesha — "Om Gam Ganapataye Namaha".
- Pray to Goddess Saraswati with the Vidyarambham shloka (below).
- Holding the child’s finger, write a sacred syllable ("Om" / "Sri") in the rice tray; the child repeats it.
- Bless the child; offer prasadam and celebrate.
Saraswati Vidyarambham Shloka
सरस्वति नमस्तुभ्यं वरदे कामरूपिणि। विद्यारम्भं करिष्यामि सिद्धिर्भवतु मे सदा॥
Sarasvati namastubhyaṁ varade kāmarūpiṇi, vidyārambhaṁ kariṣyāmi siddhir bhavatu me sadā.
Meaning (in our own words): Salutations to you, O Goddess Saraswati, giver of boons, who takes the form one wishes — I begin my learning; may success always be mine.
How NRIs Perform It Abroad
- A simple home version with a Saraswati image, the rice-tray writing and the shloka is fully acceptable.
- Arrange a purohit in person or online; many temples abroad hold group Vidyarambham on Vijayadashami.
- Involve grandparents over a video call to guide the child’s first letters.
