Satyanarayana Swamy Vratham is a popular puja offered to Lord Vishnu in the form of Satyanarayana, seeking health, prosperity, happiness and success. Many NRIs perform it after an important milestone or during difficult times. Here is a simple, practical guide to performing it at home.

When Can You Perform It?

It can be done on any day, but Ekadashi, Purnima (full moon), Sankranti, and Thursdays/Fridays are considered especially auspicious. Many perform it after moving into a new home, starting a new job, or recovering from illness.

Items (Samagri)

  • A picture or idol of Lord Satyanarayana; a Kalash with a coconut
  • Flowers, fruits (five kinds), turmeric, kumkum and rice
  • Sweet sheera/halwa (sooji/rava) as the special offering
  • Betel leaves & nuts, a lamp, incense and camphor

Step-by-Step Procedure

  1. Clean the house and puja area; take a head-bath and wear clean clothes.
  2. Place the picture/idol of Lord Satyanarayana on a clean platform; set a water-filled Kalash with mango leaves and a coconut.
  3. Light the lamp and incense; first invoke Lord Ganesha — "Om Gam Ganapataye Namaha".
  4. Invoke Lord Satyanarayana; if possible, perform a gentle abhishekam with water, milk, curd, honey and ghee.
  5. Offer flowers, fruits and the prepared sheera/halwa.
  6. Read or listen to the Satyanarayana Swamy Katha; perform aarti with camphor.
  7. Distribute the prasadam to family, friends and neighbours.

A Simple Version for Busy NRIs

  1. Light a lamp before Lord Satyanarayana’s picture; offer flowers, fruits and sweets.
  2. Chant "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya" or "Om Namo Narayanaya" 21 or 108 times.
  3. Read or listen to a short Satyanarayana Katha; perform a short aarti and share prasadam.

Tips for NRIs

  • Most items are available at Indian grocery stores or online in the USA/UK/Canada/Australia.
  • If you can’t make sheera, offer any home-made sweet with devotion.
  • Involve children so they learn the tradition.

Note: vidhi varies by region and family tradition; follow the practice taught by your elders or purohit.
